2015 Bottling superspak (6094) - Waterford, Michigan, USA - JAN 21, 2016
650 Ml bottle
Dark, murky orange amber color. Off white head, that falls to a thin collar. Good lacing on the sides of the glass. Thick AVB legs.
Nose is dark fruits, fig, burnt caramel, date, dark stone fruit, soft toasted oak and soft bourbon. Small hop presence in the nose.
Taste is fig, brown sugar, dates, and hints of chocolate. Little barrel character but that is OK. Malt really is nice. Good body and medium chewy.
Not overwhelming but easy to drink for 11%.
3900th review! 22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 2/22/2014. Pours slightly hazy dark ruby/brown color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big caramel, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, raisin, fig, apple, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, light coconut, floral, light citrus peel, and oak/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, bourbon barrel, and light hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, raisin, fig, apple, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, light coconut, floral, light citrus peel, and oak/toasted earthiness. Light bourbon/oak spiciness and citrus/floral bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, raisin, fig, apple, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, light coconut, and oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, bourbon barrel, and light hop flavors; with a great malt/oak spiciness balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming lingering after the finish. Overall this is an incredible barrel aged American Barleywine style. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, bourbon barrel, and light hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. Pretty minimal hop presence, but being that the original beer was made in 2009, I wouldn’t expect much at all. Extremely balanced between the malt and barrel complexities. A highly enjoyable offering. djd07 (15661) - Houston, Texas, USA - NOV 27, 2015
Bottle thanks to Seth. Pours a hazy orange copper with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is toffee, raisin, bourbon. Thin mouth, caramel, candy sugar, light booze, good. 50belair (3684) - Florida, USA - MAY 19, 2014
Bottle shared by Seth. Murky brown pour with an off white head. Big hoppy notes with mild bourbon and caramel malt backbeats. Average body and mouthfeel. tdmuel (251) - South Carolina, USA - FEB 25, 2014
Pours a dark and murky mahogany with a very small khaki head. Dark fruits and caramel on the nose, prominent bourbon and oak, molasses and vanilla, toffee and a hint of spice. Lots of bourbon and dark cherry on the taste, lots of vanilla, oak, a touch of cocoa, brown sugar, hint of black pepper, and a little maple syrup. Finishes pretty dry, very smooth and the alcohol is well hidden.
