COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Fermented for an extended period of time, this dark brew boasts a stunning contrast between the glossy black tone of the beer and the smoothness of the modest pale head. This glossy black beer is called "Shikkoku," named after the famed elegant jet-black lacquer work of Japan.

330ml bottle @ Okonomiyaki restaurant, Shibuya, Tokyo. Smooth, slightly roasty and earthy schwarzbier with some hints of malts and chocolate. Okay.

Dark brown near black with a khaki head. More than I usually would spend on this style, but this brewery is usually solid. This is good for the style. Dry, nutty, roasty malt aroma and flavor with hints of caramel and cocoa. Dry lightly bitter finish.

Black in color, slow settling tanned foam head. Nice coffee aroma, light caramel notes. Perfect taste, like this one. (Velp 201708)

Tap at Beerfox. Black colour, thick creamy beige head stays. Aroma is roasty, chocolatey, dark bready. Taste is roasty, milky, coffee. Dry finish, some hoppy notes in aftertaste. Medium bodied, average carbo. Pleasant brew, nice!

May 2017 - Bottle share at Leighton’s. Many thanks to Dave. As ’Coedo Shikkoku’, 5%. Dark brown, slightest red hue, foamy light brown head leaves dotted lacing. Aroma is biscuity, browned apple and brick dust. Body is light and smooth with soft carbonation. Taste is dark chocolate, dark wood, cola, dusty finish. Surprisingly nice flavour to this. On tap at CRAFT Sukhumvit, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out toasted malt, a touch of caramel and some molasses. Flavour is soft, with molasses, toasted malt and some bitter cocoa on the finish, with an almost sour tinge. It’s decent, but doesn’t seem optimal in this state. Not bad.

Rich deep dark brown coloured body with a nice tan head, about two centimetres tall. Aroma of rich malt, roast, raisins and a good deal of toffee and caramelised sugars. Medium-bodied; Rich malty flavour with some scotch, peat, grain, alcohol and a lot of roast noticeable and some good sugars. Aftertaste is a bit more robust with some scotch and peat notes throughout, but a lot of caramel and toffee and a robust maltiness near the end. Overall, a very good beer with a great flavour throughout that you don’t expect much from Japan, with the rich caramelised malts coming through in a big way. I sampled this 333 mL bottle purchased from City’Super! in Harbour City, Kowloon, Hong Kong on 02-July-2014 for HK$24,00 sampled at home in Washington on the other end of the world on 15-July-2017 a few hours before leaving for Japan.

333 ml stubby bottle. Pours a dark brown-black in colour with a thin layer of tan froth, retention relatively poor, although the brew is well carbonated. Aromas are dominated by roasted malts mainly, reminds one of a porter or dry Irish stout.Taste is somewhat more complex, in addition to the roasted malts, there are hints of chocolate, mixed in with some sweetness and a creaminess from the carbonation, giving the relatively light body a much fuller mouthfeel. Nice, rich and satisfying, don;t let the lager label fool you into thinking this is a commercial knock-off!
