Black body, super thin tan head, minimal lacing. Nose is very nice with maple syrup, fresh roasted coffee, molasses, chocolate, and caramel. Flavor is significantly muted with some sticky sweetness. Medium bodied, much thinner than the nose would suggest. Muted finish. madelfonatree (317) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - MAY 8, 2015
Look – No head. Dark thick body. 4.25
Smell – Sweet sugary chocolate. A little booze.
Taste – Has a little bit of a Belgian yeast taste. Overall it tastes like a Cow Tale or Tootsie Roll. There is a little whiskey taste.
Feel – Not as creamy and smooth as the CBS I just had. It is smooth enough.
Overall – I was at the bar to buy Backwoods Bastard or another CBS. This is not on the same playing field, but good. I am glad I tired it. JStax (6510) - Devola/Marietta, Ohio, USA - DEC 15, 2013
Growler shared by a generous person. Pours a thick black with no head. Aroma has graham crackers, chocolate, cherries, and molasses. It is more of a dark sweetness than anything. Thick body and mouthfeel. Dogbrick (13036) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - OCT 25, 2013
On draught at 1808 American Bistro. The beer pours pitch black with a medium foamy beige head that diminishes slowly. Sticky patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of bourbon, coffee and chocolate. Full-bodied with flavors of oaky bourbon, dark chocolate and charred malt. The finish is moderately boozy with a mocha aftertaste. Good beer all around.

Sample from cask at the 10th annual Barley’s Mini Real Ale Fest on 05/04/13: Opaque brownish-black pour with a thin tan head that diminishes quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of coffee, malt and subtle oak. Full-bodied with a somewhat boozy character and flavors of black coffee, roast malt and mild hops. The finish is moderately bitter with a coffee aftertaste. Good beer all around.
Vanilla upfront with slight bourbon notes , a sweet roasted malt backing with some burnt brown sugar notes, a chocolate presence but not prominent , minimal hop . JaBier (7973) - Capital City, Ohio, USA - JUN 7, 2013
Snifter at the CBC tap takeover at 4th Street Patio on 5/16/13. Pitch black pour with no head. Aroma of bitter dark chocolate, vanilla, slight bourbon and roasted malt. Dark chocolate flavor quickly smoothing out to sweet vanilla, then transitioning to more bitter chocolate, then a slight touch of bourbon before a roasty finish with a hint of sweet vanilla. Absolutely amazing and even edges out the coffee infused version I tried at the 10th Annual Barley’s Mini Real Ale Fest.

Sample from cask at the 10th annual Barley’s Mini Real Ale Fest on 5/4/13. Pitch black pour with a medium brown head. Aroma of bitter coffee and chocolate, along with slight bourbon and some vanilla. Flavor is coffee right away, then smoothes out to chocolate, vanilla and oak with slight bourbon and a smooth coffee finish. Outstanding and I didn’t realize when I had it that it was a special treatment of Steel Dawn (the regular version of which I hadn’t yet tried by this time).
