This might be the most unique barrel aged lager you will find. Brewed like a barley wine but fermented as a lager then aged on fresh wet Buffalo Trace barrels for 5 months.

Batch 2 5/25/2012. Poured into point glass, makes me wish I had a snifter. Pour is cherry Amber. Head disappeared quick. Malty nose with caramel and some vanilla somewhere and alcohol. Bold bourbon highlights accent a pleasingly mellow body that is barleywine-esk. This will hit hard with 10.83%. Way you easy to drink. I know I shouldn’t, but I judge beers by their labels. This one just looked too cool and artsy and in my experience so far I’ve been more impressed with their at than their beer. I’ve found an exception. Cool art, great beer. Also just read that this is nonprofit? To defend and honor last forms of art and culture leading the renaissance in Brooklyns historic concert island neighborhood. Cool

(22oz bottle) Pours a clear amber body with a small off-white head. Aroma of bourbon, caramel, toffee, raisins, oak, and plum. Flavor of bourbon, brown sugar, vanilla, caramel, toffee, caramel, and oak.

Pours a nice deep golden brown color. Aromas of rich dark malts, chocolate, fruit, and a hint of smoke. Flavor is rich with a lot of flavors to be found, chocolate, dark fruit, smoke, coffee, and I swear a hint of licorice.

22 oz. bottle purchased at Randall’s back in 2011 or so with the regular vintage. The intent was to try them side-by-side sometime in the last five years but it didn’t quite work out that way. I finally opened the regular and it had started to oxidize (duh) so I opened this one tonight. Pours a barely cloudy reddish amber with a small off-white head that settles into an uneven, lasting film and ring. The aroma and the flavor are basically identical - brown sugar, vanilla, chocolate, raisins, pecans, walnuts, toasted oak, dates, earth, and dry leaves. Medium-bodied, with medium carbonation and a sweet, toasty mouthfeel. Drinks like a barrel-aged barley wine. I’m stunned at how well this has held up. The regular was okay, so I figured this one would be well past its prime. If that’s the case, this further cements Shmaltz’s reputation as the most overlooked world-class barrel aging program.

(bottle - 22 oz - 2012 vintage) Copper pour with a thin tan head. Incredibly sweet aroma. Lots of malts and vanilla from the barrel. Good hint of the bourbon as well. Flavor is a sweet and bourbon bomb. Tons of sweet and caramel malts and a lot of oak, vanilla and bourbon.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber with paper thin beige head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is candy sugar, wood, bourbon, vanilla. Thin mouth, boozy, sugar malt, very sweet, wood, nice boozy finish, very nice.

A nice brew, has to be one of shmaltz brewing best beers. Definitely recommended for the flavors and style.

I love Buffalo Trace bourbon. That should be the whole review, but I’ll expand. Didn’t know this was aged in BT barrels when i bought it, but damn was i happy about it. the beer exists only to accentuate the awesomeness of buffalo trace. maybe the most bourbon prevelant beer i’ve had, so a bit of a one trick pony, but damn, was it tasty!"

Big malt aroma with caramel and big tan head. Dark ruby garnet color. Exellent taste of brown sugar and maple syrup and molasses. Great bourbon secondary flavor. Slight alcohol warmth. A superior brew

22oz bottle obtained from some shop in San Diego and consumed on my hotel balcony, 18th March 2014. Taken with the most expensive Pizza (room service) I have ever had in my life! I really enjoyed this, certainly different and unlike most beers I have drank over the years. Deep, dark ruby red with a full head. Sweet aroma of malt molasses and hints of bourbon from the barreling. The taste is again fairly sweet with various malty flavours to the fore throughout the brew. The alcohol compliments the taste rather than overruling it and the body feel is smooth and rich (for a lager based beer). Overall a very nice ’night-cap’ and a fitting end to a great sightseeing/drinking day and evening in San Diego.
