Mermaids, those mysterious aquatic lovelies, have popped up all over the world in legend since 1000 BC. No scientific evidence has ever surfaced to support their existence, but we’re not ones to argue with folklore.

(draft @ The Old Toad - Rochester, NY) Clear gold pour with a thick white head. Aroma is dry and lightly bitter with some sweet and fruity hints. Flavor is a nice pils flavor. Dry and floral at the beginning with some hoppy bitterness, a smooth and lightly sweet middle, and a very lightly bitter and lingering finish.

(Old BA rate - tap) Light orangey gold color and poured with a generous frothy white cap. Some noticeable rising carbonation. Minerally and a little earthy; bit of grain; pretty muted actually. Clean, dry earthy hoppiness; just OK and nothing too oustanding in terms of hop presence or other character. Lightish; very dry which is great for the style and added to the refreshing qualities of the brew. Solid enough; the dry nature made up for some of its other lackings. Overall, not a terrible example, but just above average to me.

12oz bottle from Whole Foods, Durham. Ever open a beer without even the faintest hiss of carbonation? Me too. This one. Dark copper pour, basically looks like an amber lager rather than a pilsener. The nose is nice, fairly sharp and well hopped. The mouthfeel is obviously quite lacking, but the flavors - with some rye, spice, and nice peppery hops - are still detectable. I’d give this another shot, with the hope that some carbonation would yield better results.

Sampled on 6/10/2011. This pilsner pours a medium orange gold color from a 120z bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is cereal and grassy, fruity and slightly sweet. A medium bodied pilsner. The malts are cereal and grainy. The hops are earthy and spicy. Lively carbonation. A decent pilsner, it doesn’t seem to have any of those adjunct flavors. Crisp and clean tasting. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

I really need to try to set aside style designation here when I try to rate this, but it will be difficult considering that this is nowhere close to being a pils, aside from the fact that it is a lager - "hey guys, let’s make a beer with seven different malts (two of which are rye) and four hops (none of which are typically associated with pilsners) and market it as a pils" - fuck that - the beauty of a pils is in its simplicity, guys - anyway - hazy straw - aroma is light honey, toasted grains, light Vienna richness, lightly spicy rye - flavor is strongly husky/grainy and moderately bitter - earthy, American hop profile - a honey sweetness through the tail end and finish - herbal, tea-like character - too much apparent alcohol in the finish - drinkable, with no glaring flaws, but NOT a pilsner.

probstblueribbon (3791) - Nepean, Ontario, CANADA - AUG 11, 2011
Bomber from BOTW (Rochester), shared with GRM and Lubiere, served cold in a tulip glass. 05AU11.

App.: Clear very deep golden/light amber with a white rim. Aroma: A good whiff of apple juice, grainy, dusty, other vague fruits, sort of an odd bitter note, maybe lightly floral and perfumed, slight spiciness, a bit tight. Palate: Medium body and effervescence. Flav.: Quite fruity, perfumed, a bit of rye spiciness, some floral hops, grainy, almost mashy, cooked cereal, better than the nose, dry with decent bitterness and a perfumed, apple finish.

UPDATED: JUL 11, 2012 Clear golden with a white head. Some lacing. Aroma of pilsner malt, rye, floral and spicy hops. Taste is mostly pilsner malt and some rye, with the hops imparting a mild bitterness. Medium bodied, pretty crisp.
