As the capital of Iowa, Des Moines constantly surprises first-time visitors with its mix of expected agrarian heritage and influences and unanticipated cosmopolitan flare. So too, with Des Moines IPA, an American take on a world beer: India Pale Ale (IPA).

Iowas steady, well balanced nature is reflected in this IPA with its mix of medium body, lighter color and plenty of malt flavor to balance the massive hop impact. Citrusy and piney hops from the Pacific Northwest offset the robust malt flavor of the two-row barley and medium crystal malts. Des Moines IPA proudly represents the Hawkeye State in the category of American IPA, a favorite of beer connoisseurs all across the country.

(From notes) Draft The brewery, 3-16-2016. Aroma is mild pine, moderate citrus, grain. Flavor shows substantial hops profile: citrus intermingled with pine and grass. Decent grain backbone that is not too sweet. Body is medium with a lingering bitterness. Pretty balanced, nicely drinkable.

From a growler provided by jcwattsrugger. Thank you. The pour is amber-yellow with a lingering white head. Subtle is a good deScription for the aroma with a nice toasted bread character at first followed by a little pine. Neither overwhelms the other. Smooth, creamy medium to better than medium body. The taste is evolving. It begins with the same toasted bread and biscuit sweetness and turns into a decently hopped pine finish. Enjoyable.

Tap at the brewery. Pours hazy golden with a good lacy head. Aroma is light citrus and pine. Not much on the nose. Taste is citrusy, pineapple, lightly bitter hops, semi sweet with a bit of honey. Light body and medium carbonation. Not bad.

Thanks for being my 700th, Des Moines IPA. Was it as good for you as it was for me? Drinking this beer reminded me of a little history fun fact. The Peoria tribe of Native Americans really enjoyed trolling the French settlers in the area of modern-day Iowa and told them the region was called Moingoana. The settlers took ownership of the name and French-ifed it. Little did they realize the word they named the territory after was the Native American word for shitface. So heres to Des Moine IPA. A devilishly tasty IPA that strikes the balance between biscuit-like malt and piney, resinous hops. In other words, heres to an IPA Id happily get shitfaced on from the land of shitfaces.
