As the capital of Iowa, Des Moines constantly surprises first-time visitors with its mix of expected agrarian heritage and influences and unanticipated cosmopolitan flare. So too, with Des Moines IPA, an American take on a world beer: India Pale Ale (IPA).

Iowa’s steady, well balanced nature is reflected in this IPA with its mix of medium body, lighter color and plenty of malt flavor to balance the massive hop impact. Citrusy and piney hops from the Pacific Northwest offset the robust malt flavor of the two-row barley and medium crystal malts. Des Moines IPA proudly represents the Hawkeye State in the category of American IPA, a favorite of beer connoisseurs all across the country.

Growler @ Bus. Thanks, John. Pours a clear golden color with a white head. Some decent grapefruit on the nose, but lots of vegetal aromas. Bread, orange peel, and some pine. Flavor is bitter pine and citrus rind. Fair amount of celery and vegetal hops. Moderate bready malt sweetness and a touch of peach.

On da bus @ RBSG 2014 between the Morgan Street and 4 Hands stops: As rating on a moving bus can do not much in the way of notes... "Juicy, resiny, biscuity, piney hops. Lively sharp mouth feel." I really liked this. Of course after the sucky brews at Morgan Street about anything would have been greeted happily.

This is golden orange with a creamy foam head. It has a pine hope nose and big, earthy bitterness and a simple sweet malt character. It is unexeceptional and very much down the middle for an IPA but it gets the job done pretty well.

UPDATED: JUL 31, 2017 Nose is very floral with some cracker. Taste is slightly watery and thin. Not much else going on. Kinda flat. Orig. 2.7 Rerated. Still a fairly floral IPA, but a touch cris and maybe not as bad as originally rated. Still not a favorite.

Samples from a growler, thanks! Pours a clear yellowish gold with a white head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has a nice grassy and citrus hop with a bit of earthy grain. Flavor has citrus and pine with a hint sweet grains backing.

On tap at Legends south. Pours clear golden with a thick lacy white head. Aroma of citrus hops, very sweet. Flavour is hoppy, but not thick. Finish is smoothly bitter and clean. So very refreshing.

on tap @ Confluence Brewing / Des Moines IA --- Clear, medium gold, good thick rim head, hanging streamers of lace. Taste is malt that clicks in a bit of caramel as it enters the palate, then adds citrus hops in the finish. The finish lingers, finally allowing a bit of malt to re-emerge. A simple, but well-conceived IPA.
