Imogene, Iowa, is quintessential Iowa — a tiny town founded by an Irish immigrant group to support a patchwork of farms that surrounded it. Our Imogene Red is a tribute to the thousands of small towns that dot Iowa. It was created by head brewer John Martin in memory of his grandmother, Frances Jane Dempsey Martin, who died in November 2012 after living all 98 of her years in and around Imogene. Made with English Maris Otter two-row malt, English East Kent Golding hops, and Irish ale yeast, Imogene Red has the color, clarity, aroma and flavor of a classic Irish ale. Irish reds are a smooth favorite for malty beer fans. Raise a pint in memory of Grandma Martin and in tribute to small-town Iowa.

1qt mini growler from Urbandale Hy-Vee, in a Sam Smith pint glass. Subdued aroma of cracker bread, caramel, honey and banana. Pours a cloudy, rusty red with a thin bubbly head and effervescence exploding churning and roiling everywhere. Real pop on this one, very much like Coca Cola. Very pretty in the glass. Crisp clean acidity up front followed by dry biscuit and sweet malt with just a hint of ripe banana sweetness and gentle hop bitterness on the finish. Light to medium body, great acidity and effervescence keeping things fresh and light. My least favorite thing in the world might be flat, stale English beer. I was initially put off by the aromatic qualities of this one, probably based on bad experiences in the past with stale Smithwick’s and Killian’s bottles in sketchy watering holes, so it came as a tremendous relief to find the flavor profile so light and fresh and approachable. Probably the best beer of this style I’ve had to date, which admittedly isn’t saying much. Hats off once again to Confluence’s talented brewers!

Aroma is caramel malts, earth and light citrus. The flavor is caramel/malts, fruit, biscuits/bread and a slightly dry/smooth finish.

Had this on draft at Confluence Brewery in Des Moines. Sweet and tart taste for a red. Dark with white head. A little too sweet for me but not hard to drink
