COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular. Also available bottled.
Oats are used in the grist of this beer to give body and smoothness, enhancing the roasted barley, giving it complex flavours reminiscent of dark chocolate and coffee. This is balanced by a fresh hop bitterness and dry silky finish.

Bottle from Coniston Brewery, The Black Bull Inn, Coniston, Cumbria. Dark black-brown in colour with chocolate, coffee and brine notes with bitter coffee and vanilla on the smooth roasted finish. Very good.

Deep brown pour with a fizzy tan head. Very thin watery body with harsh carbonation. Chocolate, light roasted malt, some molasses in aroma. Similar flavor. The body is way too thin to support this brew. Ok at best.

Black with a khaki head. Aroma is oats and malts. Taste is bitter and bland malts and slight oaks. There are no noticable flavors. possibly past best buy date.

Cask at the brewpub. Clear black coloured pour with reddy hues and a lasting creamy tan head. Aroma is milky roast, mineral, damp campfire, earthy. Flavour is composed of black roast, burnt toast, earthy mineral, twig Palate is light and smooth, lowish carbonation. Tangy bitter roast I. The finish.

On cask at Black Bull Coniston - Jet black body, thin tan head. Nose is roasted grain, bit of porridge, hoppiness there too. Taste is similar, nice burnt bitter finish. Not bad.

A good drinkable oatmeal stout pours jet black with a ring of froth left after a couple minutes tastes sweet and chocvolaste milkshake with the alcohol coming through a decent pint just missing s I me t Hong to really make it strand out

PorterPounder (7886) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - FEB 20, 2015
Tallahassee, Fl. - ABC Fine Wine & Spirits - Betton - 500 ml bottle. Inky black pour, quickly diminishing khaki colored head. Aroma has some grainy essence to it, a touch of molasses. Flavor is nice and pleasant with some bitter unsweetened chocolate notes, a touch of molasses, some cold day old coffee, some roasted notes permeate in the back end. Nice, smooth mouthfeel.

Aurelius (5289) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - FEB 19, 2015
Smells like an ESB -- aley, slightly candied, plummy, some darker fruit. Doesn’t smell roasted. Good potato masher bottle, perfunctory label. Very dark but clear beer. Smooth, sweet, peaty malt, low bittering, cherry (brown ale ) notes. Cherry malty finish. Really comes off as an ESB or Scotch. Enjoyable, but lacking some carbonation or mouthfeel at times. Liquors, Betton.

Bottle from Booths, Settle. Black, no head. Quite a light tasting stout with a medium body, it does however have some roasted malt evident.

Bottle at home. Pours a jet black with tiny tan head. Aroma of liquorice and oatmeal, taste hint coffee and roast malty, oats and liquorice. Pleasant!
