COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
COOPs 2012 Barleywine Ale was a pursuit of this particular beer style in the English tradition. This malt forward brew was crafted with copious amounts of Maris Otter, and accented with toasted malts. After fermentation, it was aged in oak barrels where souring bacteria and yeast were introduced. The result is a blend of rich malt character and noticeable tartness.

UPDATED: FEB 4, 2013 Grabbed a bottle of this while in Tulsa on business. Bottle # 533/1534. The pour is a murky brown color with a thin fluffy tan head developing on top. Some spotty lacing slides along the glass after each sip. The oak is strong in the scent with noticeable caramel and fruity notes of plum and funky cherry. Theres definitely some fruity tartness to the flavor as well with some funky yeast notes. The malts are sweet but also a bit toasty here too. Its a bit prickly on the palate with some grapey vinous notes helping that along. Surprisingly, the oak is much more subtle in the flavor than it is in the aroma. In short, a slightly funky and tart beer with a Barleywine base. Somewhat odd at times but a good, fun beer.

Properly cellared 750 ml bottle. 2015 vintage. Bottle 1324 of 1524. Dark murky brown color. Aroma is oak, toffee, molasses. Can find the bourbon. The flavor also has lots of oak over caramel malt and moderately strong toffee. Its full bodied with an oak and sweet finish. All oak without much bourbon but still pretty respectable.

Bottle. It poured a hazy, red / brown color with a tan head. The aroma was of malts, caramel, coffee and some fruits. The taste was similar to the aroma with more malts, caramel, coffee, dark fruits and oak. Nice aftertaste. Decent.

Pretty good barleywine. Bourbon barrel aging lends it a vanilla, okay flavor. Nice plum and chocolate character.

Bottle 0002 of 1524. Pours a hazy copper with thin tan head that leaves light lace. Aroma is big sweet malts over hint of funk and woody must. Taste is like a nice barley wine with a touch of sweet and sour. Interesting, might develop more in the bottle, but to me is mostly barley wine right now.

Pours a brown color with off-white head. Dark fruits, oak wood, and some spice on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with a tartness that is unique to this barleywine, usually they finish sweet.

Draft - Vintage 2012 - Vinous, plums, caramel and barrel notes. Tons of barrel notes, plum and dark fruit. Very little of the richness I expected.

On tap at Tapwerks. Pours a clear hazy amber brown with a gray head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has tons of sweet grains and caramel with sweet bourbon, booze and a touch of vanilla. Flavor has a much more sweet grain present with some toffee, caramel, bourbon and even a faint tartness underlying.
