Bottle sampled. Pours a dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, and roasted malts. Flavor is rich and smooth and similar to aroma with a light bitter finish. A very good porter. WeeHeavySD (3387) - Portland, Oregon, USA - OCT 13, 2008
12oz from zathrus13. Pours black with a 3 finger tan head. Nose is sweet and chocolaty and it matches the heavy duty sweetness of the beer. Very sweet, but very nice porter. pantanap (3366) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 18, 2009
12oz bottle from a recent trade.....pours an attractive almost black pour with a moderate light tan head.....aroma of chocolate malt, dark fruit, and a mild roast.... smooth and creamy chocolate notes and roasted malt. an unexpected sour note in the finish. carbonation was a bit too lively and could have been more calm in nature. did not really enjoy the sourness as it disjointed the brew a bit. pineypower (3345) - Ocean County, New Jersey, USA - OCT 25, 2008
Bottle from Capone’s. Pours out black with a small to moderate brown head. Aroma is of roasted malt, chocolate and a slight earthy note. Taste is complex with a very nice mouthfeel, roasted malts come together with chocolate and some coffee and earthy notes going on in there also, the chocolate is center stage without going over the top. Very well done puzzl (3260) - New York, New York, USA - MAR 23, 2009
Tap at the Tiedhouse. Rich, chocolate and espresso aroma. Sweaty and nice. Dryish, creamy, chalky palate, not as rich as the aroma but a very solid effort. Sorry for this terribly short rating, that’s all I’ve got written down and to be honest I can’t remember a damn thing about this beer.

UPDATED: JAN 3, 2010 growler provided by ty5592 and the growler swap 1.0... root beer colored dark brown with a thin tan head that has a purple tint to it. the aroma is ashy with lots of 70% bitter cocoa, vanilla bean scalded cream and some dark dried fruit. dark malt, wood and coffee dominate the palate. they’re followed by a light sourness. full bodied with a creamy texture that is cut nicely by the bitter/sour/ashy/astringency of the malts...7/4/7/4/16/3.8

batch 3 bottle shared by rudy on 12/4/2009.
really dark, thick pour with a monstrous persistent cocoa colored head.
initial blast of ashy sourness and a ton of fruit up the nose. that is followed by chocolate, spice and a funky weird burn.
the flavor is primarily tart with a tart ashy finish... odd (but i just had ng sour porter) but there are some decent notes of vanilla, chocolate and roast. it is acidic for sure.... infected? the acidity does play a role in making the full body very easy to drink by making it seem thinner. over carbonation fights with it simultaneously.
this is not the same beer i enjoyed two years ago... not terrible but wrong. 6/4/5/3/12/3.0
Draft at GLI. Chocolate donut aroma with a really hoppy bite. The chocolate is more in the aroma than the flavor. There’s a burnt malt thing going on. This stuff ain’t half bad. kmweaver (3207) - Petaluma, California, USA - MAR 14, 2008
22oz handbottle, 2008 batch, courtesy of axilla. Thanks, John! Pours a very dark cola-brown color; textured, medium tan head with solid retention and web-like lacing with medium bubbles; excellent head texture; even for a handbottle, a beautiful pour. Lots of oily chocolate, nougat, and creamy vanilla in the aroma; smells like oily, very creamy milk chocolate. Very relaxed carbonation. Medium-to-full, creamy mouthfeel: roasted malts, ridiculously creamy and dense milk chocolate, nougat, vanilla; a nice citrus and mineral bitterness coming through as well; softly roasted, viscous, chocolate-full porter. Very creamy and generous. Lengthy finish, showing bitter chocolate, tons of breadiness, and roasted malts in the finish; a touch of bitterness. ryan (3186) - Beltsville, Maryland, USA - AUG 28, 2008
Courtesy of kmweaver. Dark brown body with a medium sized light tan head. The nose is cola, chocolate, molasses and raisins. The flavor is just lightly sweet with lots of bitter, buttery cocoa, cola, brown sugar and dates. Medium body is soft with light carbonation. The beer pours dark chestnut black with a decent tan head. The aroma is smoky and a bit of roasted malts. The flavors bring notes of coffee, bitter chocolate, and smoke blended nicely on an easy body. The beer is delicious overall.
