Tap. Clear dark brown with a reddish tinge, foamy tan head. Smells of roasted malt, coffee, and light citrus. Flavor is similar with a mostly sweet malt flavor. Medium bodied, dry finish, lingering malt.

Pint draft at the brewery tasting room in Denver, Colorado. The pour is a darker brown black, hazed with a well formed 1/2 inch tan head. The aroma is caramel toffee sweet, roast, and earthy pine. The taste is the nose, balance between soft sweet caramel toffee, soft roast and the earth and pine dry out the end. The palate is medium bodied, crisp carbonation clean finish. On tap @ Copper Kettle. Very dark brown pour with a khaki head. Aroma is big time celery. A touch of plastic, roast, and paint. Decent cocoa, coffee, and herbal hops. Pint at the brewery. Pours quite black with a small head. Aroma doesn’t reveal hopping to the extent of most IPAs, but this is done with all British ingredients so the high alpha acid PNW hops I’ve always had from the style in the past are absent. Smells like a delicious cup of coffee with earthy notes and dark cacao. Great mouthfeel, goes well with the roasty, malty body. Hops become noticed a little, enough to raise an eyebrow with its bite in the finish, but not enough to sell me on a black IPA. Still, great roasty porter-like flavors make this an excellent beer and there’s a decent woody hop presence. Very clean and balanced.

Taster at the brewery. Pours a thin white head, medium duration, with slight lacing, over a clear, black (SRM 40) body.....nose is coffee, cocoa, light toffee/caramel.....taste is coffee, cocoa, toffee/caramel, light grapefruit peel bitterness at the finish....mouth feel medium, carbonation medium. Pour on tap at the brewery, dark brownish almost black pour with off white head, aroma brought notes of caramel, toffee going into roasted chocolate, hints of slight grass and pine as well, spice notes come through. Taste is spice with slight fruit, hints of caramel and chocolate into a roasted, bittering finish with a hint of espresso. Not bad, more on the end of a porter than IPA, but tasty.
