Pour on tap at the brewery, dark black with tan/off white head, aroma has notes of dark chocolate, coffee, molasses, some anise, dark fruits, some nice pine, grass and spicy hops, touch of roast. Taste is dark chocolate, coffee, roast, some grass, pine and earthy spice from the hops, hints of roast and dark fruit, caramel and molasses with a touch of anise, finishing fairly bitter. Basically a slightly hoppy stout, but a bit thin to be in that regard. sonnycheeba (5988) - Federal Hill, Baltimore, Maryland, USA - JUN 3, 2012

Tap @ Copper Kettle. 12oz into a snifter. Deep brown/black appearance with a small, creamy, light brown head. Slightly burnt, roasty malty, black coffee, light chocolate, fairly mild earthy hoppy aroma. Roasty, thick dark chocolate malty, espresso, a bit herbal, earthy, bitter hoppy flavor. Not bad but there really isn’t much for hops in the aroma.

Tap at the brewery - black pour with a frothy, lasting, off white head - nose is earthy, lightly fruity, with a fair amount of bittersweet chocolate and a mild woody note - medium bodied, considering the abv, and the alcohol is well-masked, making it a bit dangerous - flavor is initially sweet dark malts, vanilla - but this quickly makes way for a much drier quality, as bitter chocolate, earthy hop bitterness, a slight woody/cask kind of note, light char and black malt bitterness - the hop flavor is a bit on the fruity side, which doesn’t work as well with thebother qualities as it could - still, for an imperial black IPA, it is fairly well done - would prefer American hops. onceblind (9630) - Denver, Colorado, USA - MAY 24, 2012
Black with a little beige head that leaves a bit of lace. Aroma of sticky malty dark chocolate tones with just a touch of floral hoppy notes and earthy roasty toffee. Dark malty grainy flavor with some earthy toffee, bakers chocolate, roasty bitter tones, and a gentle but balancing bitterness that brings a subtle floral and citrusy tone. Assertive and bold, but the dark malty sweetness and the moderately citrusy hops just didn’t combine well for me and my palate. Definitely one of my more favored BIPAs, but...meh Pawola22 (3262) - Woodridge, Illinois, USA - MAY 23, 2012
On tap at the brewery in Denver, CO. Pours a black body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is roasty with a sweet chocolate and toffee malt backing. Lots of earthy hops with a bit of a weird citrus and tropical fruit. A few yeast esters as well. Flavor is better, but I’m not the biggest fan of the hops and the fruitiness they give off. Earthy and roasty up front with the hoppy fruits giving off a slight sweetness. Again a bit of a weird citrus and light tropical fruit. Nice chocolate malt backing with some toffees as well before this finishes dry and moderately bitter with some resins, lots of earth with some fruits, a medium roast, and a nice malt sweetness. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium body and a soft, medium carbonation. Overall, not a bad Black IPA. Well hopped with lots of earthy hops and an interesting fruitiness that I wasn’t the biggest fan of, but it grew on me a bit as the beer opened up. Nice roast presence and a solid chocolate and slight toffee malt backing.
