It doesn’t take a genius to kno w quality West Coast IPAs require a stupid amount of hops. A generous blend of Nugget hops and the four Cs—Cascade, Centennial, Chinook and Columbus—brings forth a myriad of tropical fruit flavors and a brawny, persistent bitterness that makes for a highly intelligent brew.

Draft at the tasting room. Hazy golden body, small fluffy white head. Aroma of fruits, raisins and herbs. Taste very weak for the percentage. However, it’s very balanced and has a silky body. Even more fruit in the taste and with a delayed bitterness that grows in the finish.

Bottle. Clear orange with a white head. Aroma is very nice. Floral, mild bitterness, sweet tropical fruits. Very nice aroma. There is actually a pretty intense caramel, sugar thing going on too. Taste starts nicely bitter and slides into a more balanced sweet malty flavor. It ends with a nice lasting bitter aftertaste that stays for a while (hey, Get Your Gun). Overall, a great beer! Nicely balanced between the bitter hop profile and an interesting sweet, sugary, malt presence.

Sperine (283) - North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 5, 2013
On tap at Iron Abbey in Horsham, PA. I may be biased since my girlfriend was born and raised in Coronado, but they are pumping out a solid product here. Great blend of hops and on the more drinkable side of beers this big.

ComradeK (1230) - Sydney, AUSTRALIA - APR 29, 2013
650ml bottle. Pours a clear medium gold, with a large off-white head, which lasts fairly well and leaves decent lacing. Fruity hops notes of grapefruit, mango and pineapple mix with pine needles and caramel and white bread malt in the aroma. Powerful grapefruit hops up front segue into fruitier tropical flavours of pineapple and mango, with a touch of kiwifruit leading into the mid-palate. Supple salted caramel malt in the mid-palate provides some backing to the hops. Melon and mango hops come in at the finish, leaving a lingering mango aftertaste. The range and depth of tropical hops flavours in this beer is very enjoyable, and there is just enough malt backing to sustain them, making for a classy imperial IPA.
