It doesn’t take a genius to kno w quality West Coast IPAs require a stupid amount of hops. A generous blend of Nugget hops and the four Cs—Cascade, Centennial, Chinook and Columbus—brings forth a myriad of tropical fruit flavors and a brawny, persistent bitterness that makes for a highly intelligent brew.

Type: 22-oz. bottle Glass: Karl Strauss pint glass From: Village Square Liquor & Keg Price: $7.49 Misc.: Got a California Prop 65 Warning: Some materials used in the colored decorations on this container contain cadmium, a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm. Poured an orange, caramel and slightly hazy with two fingers of frothy white head, which took a long while to disappear. Thick, foamy, wet and sporadic lacing on the sides. Nice retention on the top all the way down. Smelled a potent whiff of citrus and floral hops. Got orange and actually reminded me of an orange creamsicle. A whiff of tropical flavors. Sugary sweet floral hops. Very appealing overall. Tasted similar to the nose, but not quite as potent (or good). I’m bad at naming specific types of hops. The bottle says Cascade, Centennial, Chinook and Columbus. I recognize all but Chinook, but Columbus seems to be the one I taste here. Also citrus (orange and light tangerine) and still some light tropical notes (reminded me of tropical bubble gum). Very bitter on the tongue after. Light-to-medium body. Creamy texture. Average-to-lively (above average) carbonation. Bitter finish. Just a good double IPA overall. I haven’t been a fan over the other Coronado beer I’ve tried, so I was excited to have a good one. Would definitely have this again.

Light copper pour with an off white head that leaves a nice lacing. Balanced aroma of sweet malt and strong pine/resin/citrus aroma. Flavor is very similar, very well balanced mix of bitter hops and sweet sticky caramel malt. Medium body, the alcohol is well hidden. This beer earns a seat at the big boy IPA table.

Pours clear amber with thin head. Nose is citrus and pine. Mid range body. Finish is dry piney hops. Wouldn’t have pegged this one for a double but enjoyable none the less.

Bottle from Stirchley Wines, Birmingham. Looks, smells gorgeous. Has a very dry, bitter finish. Before the finish, it’s caramelly sweet, with a blooming alcohol sweet hit. Carrott notes in the middle and peppered cabbage too. Really like it. Hints at, but isn’t quite (cos not strong enough), but could almost be a US Barley Wine. Although it’s the wrong colour. Great carbonation.

I really liked this one-- it’s right where I like an Imperial or Double IPA to be, in terms of clearly "more" than standard IPA, but not offensively so. For me the subtle brown sugary sweetness is just exactly enough to take the edge of the pleasantly intense hops. Reminds me of other similar sugar / hop beers like Hopslam. For a high ABV beer, it also very successfully avoids tasting too alcoholy. Very good stuff.
