An old English style barleywine, this deep reddish-hued beer smells of dark dried fruits and toffee. Hints of vanilla and oak round out the full malt flavor, with a lingering mild bitterness. Enjoy before or after dinner in front of a fire in your favorite arm chair.

FROTHINGSLOSH (7697) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 9, 2013
From the February 2013 3R6P tasting. My favorite beer of the night!+++ Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a brown color with orange highlights and a large foamy orange-tan head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was woody with sweet caramel, honey, bourbon and vague fruity hops. The flavor was bourbon, wood, coconut, pineapple, berries and vanilla. Wonderfully full of flavor and complex. Long wood, vanilla and pineapple finish. Moderately full bodied. Marvelous.

22 oz. bottle, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks Dany), pours a deep dark ruby red with a small beige head. Aroma of bourbon barrels, dark dried fruits, especially dates and prunes, brown sugar, and some slight nail polish scents. Flavour is dominated by prunes, plums and dates / figs; the bourbon barrels are not overly prominent, but there is some noticeable heat from the booze. Quite fruity from the prunes ,with a relatively low complexity considering the style. Still, a nice warming sipper

tgncc (3130) - Bellmore, New York, USA - NOV 9, 2012
Bottle shared at Dadtoberfest. The aroma is nice: candi sugar, fruit, bread, bourbon. The appearance is red/brown, off-white head. The flavor is like the aroma, really nice. The bourbon is restrained, and adds just the right amount of flavor to the beer. The finish is sweet, pine needles. Medium/thick in body. Nicely done.

Rando7 (779) - Iowa, USA - OCT 28, 2012
Aroma malts and bourbon with typical "old ale" notes. Taste slightly sweet with bourbon, oak, caramel, dark fruits. Oaky finish with a little oxidation and rusty/metallic taste at times. Palate full with slight carbonation. Decent but wouldn’t seek out.

blipp (9172) - La Mesa, California, USA - OCT 25, 2012

Bottle sampled at Dadpad Dadtoberfest 2012. Pours a deep brownish amber with nice lacing. Aroma is caramel malts, nuts, vanilla, oak and bourbon. Mouthfeel is medium to thin with notes of sweet caramelized nuts, vanilla, bourbon, oak, roast, light smoke and wood.

Glouglouburp (6103) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - SEP 4, 2012
In short: A rich malty burgundy beer with moderate bourbon presence. Pretty good
How: Tap at Tap-NY 2012
The look: Mostly clear light ruby-brown body topped by a beige ring of foam
In long: Nose is pecan pie, caramel, vanilla, bourbon. Taste is a bit on the sweet side, caramel pie sensation, medium bourbon presence, nutty notes of almonds, wood, some alcohol heat. More drinkable than expected which I find is often the case with a woody beer because it dries out the finish a bit. Nothing is overdone here, nothing exceptional but overall well balanced, I liked this one more than I thought I would. The last beer I rated at Tap-NY 2012 festival, I was getting pretty drunk, and after the last-call I tried explaining to the security person that I was on ratebeer and I just needed a few more minutes to rate this last beer but he didn’t leave me alone and kept asking me why I wasn’t wearing any pants.
