A steady pour into my New Belgium globe glass produces a ½-finger thick, nicely browned head. The beer is a concentrated brown, almost black color that shows a clear, deeply-burnt amber hue if held up directly to a bright light. The aroma smells of dark chocolate, richly toasted brown bread, and a bright, Full City roast coffee note that takes on a roasted nutty like aromatic note in the finish. alexanderj (3605) - Branson, Missouri, USA - JUL 2, 2013
Lightly sweet with dark chocolate notes up front, and sweeter brown chocolate flavors towards the finish. The finish has a drying, roasted grain astringency, a touch of chalky roasted grain husk, and lots of burnt grain character to it that all manages to be quite smooth. There is a rich, toasted nuttiness here, as well as a touch of burnt acidity; this last adds just a touch of sharpness here. The roast character adds a light bitterness, and the bitterness from the hop character is quite light as well, which really accentuates the sweeter side of the dark malt. The beer is fairly light, definitely quite quaffable, thought there is just a touch of viscosity here. As the beer warms up it begins to pick up a touch of a weird vegetal character starts to come out, though it remains fairly muted.
A bit like a Sweet Stout in its smooth, malty, sweet focus on flavors and aromatics. Pretty good actually, and a beer I am enjoying more than I thought I would. Having said that it could use a bit more to balance the sweet dark malt character here.
Bottle; dark cola brown in color. Aroma of caramel, cocoa, must, minerals. Flavor had a more roasted element. Palate was a touch thin. Overall it was a solid effort. alexandersh (196) - Gilbert, Arizona, USA - JUL 2, 2013
Bottle: Poured dark brown/black. Aroma: Malt/Toffee - Coffee. Flavor: Tastes of malt and coffee, with a sweet roasted flavor. Enjoyable brew. DMLINAZ (337) - Mesa, Arizona, USA - MAR 2, 2013
Had a pitcher on tap at OHSO, Phoenix. Decent porter; nice aroma. Flavor is smooth, with hints of chocolate and coffee. A bit more smooth than I’m used to in a porter, not as bitter coffee as I’ve come to expect. Good, though slightly thin-bodied for a porter. daknole (11050) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - FEB 4, 2013
Tap at OHSO. dark brown, light brown head. Straight forward porter. Roast, chocolate and a good hint of coffee.
