3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Served from a 12 oz bottle from Grand Wine & Spirit. The appearance is a muddled burgundy to brown. The nose is butterscotch, pear skins, and other malty things. The flavors follow suite with a bit of a sour or granny smith apple that is overtaken by rubbing alcohol that does fade a touch and lets in a little cherry kick. Mouth is medium bodied. An unrefined brew that could use some work.
The appearance was a murky dark orange close to brown color with a cap of a little white foamy head that fell off at a moderate pace. Not much lace.
The aroma had some sweet malty tones of caramel/toffee, light nuts, some herbal to grassy hop character and ended with a little bit of earthiness.
The flavor was malty dry sweet with the herbal and earthy components trying to blend but mostly stayed somewhat separated. Lingering aftertaste of the maltiness. Long malty finish.
The palate was between light and medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt low but expected. ABV felt secure and expected.
Overall, pretty decent beer to me as it seemed clean, but also didn’t have the peat or smoke I normally associate with the style, so that kinda takes a little bit of a hit. kevd193213 (991) - Hope Valley, Rhode Island, USA - MAY 21, 2016

12 ounce bottle. Very dark with just a little red. A tan ring. Rich fruity malts in the aroma. Dark fruit, very rich malts, and toffee are all tasted early. It is kind of like a fruit cake and it is a bit bready. Also a little like chocolate covered cherries. A dry bitterness begins to emerge and is somewhat a chemical effect. A good winter warmer of a beer. redtechnj (315) - Williamstown, New Jersey, USA - SEP 29, 2015

On tap in Reading Terminal Market, pours a murky brown with some thin white head. Nose is odd, spice, candy sugar, some root vegetables, maybe even a little cooked squash. Flavor follows, cloves, all spice, candy, toffee. Boozy finish. Reminded me of a bad dubbel. Makes for an even worse scotch. rocbyter (2123) - Waterbury, Connecticut, USA - AUG 9, 2015
Malt and sweet nutty aroma. Dark amber color with a medium tan head. Light bitter flavor throughout. Lightly creamy palate in the finish. boto (2210) - Granby, Connecticut, USA - MAY 28, 2015
Draught: This one pours a clear, dark copper color. There was a small off white head. It has a good malty nose. Caramel, toffee, some fruits. The taste is good. Just a bit more than medium bodied. Toffee, caramel, a hint of chocolate, maybe some raisins. Some hop notes also that kept the sweetness down. Nice.
