strap (953) - Sindelfingen, GERMANY - APR 11, 2017
On tap at the source. Chocolate and malty aroma. Sweet and roasted flavor with chocolate and coffee. Light on the hops for a black IPA but still pretty solid ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at Country Boy. Pours a deep brown, nearly black. Aroma is dominated by hops, mostly spruce.

Really good and tasty. One of the better black ipas that I have had. Looks as good as it tastes.

Draft at Ei8ht Ball. Pours a dark cola brown color with a thin beige film. The aroma and flavor were very strange based on the description of the beer. This is listed as a black IPA so I had certain expectations for what was coming. there was very little roasted malt, chocolate or bitterness of any kind; instead it was very fruity, dark berries, sweet, a weird herbal note to the finish, it didn’t come off as a black IPA, top hopped porter or anything close, I am wandering if this is a new batch because the other ratings are more in line with what I expected or is this an old keg that didn’t age well, either way I was not a fan of this one.

b3shine (9072) - Indiana, USA - JUN 27, 2014
Draft to taster. Abv is listed as 9%. Looks solid; a somewhat translucent dark amberish brown with off-white head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells of dark malt, dark chocolate, bitter hops, and a bit of roast. Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel. A solid Black IPA; a hint of soap on the back though.

Drake (14057) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - FEB 20, 2014
Kentucky Fried Charleston Trip Beer #38. Draft at the brewery. Pours a dark brown color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, citrus hops. The taste is roasted malts, chocolate, herbal and citrus hops and a mild bit of nuttiness. Medium bodied, slight lingering bitterness, good balance.

32oz growler filled at the brewpub. This batch was labeled 9.6%, hell yeah. Enjoyed about 12 hours later with brunch, shared with friends. Dark brown, near black color. Good thin tan head. Nice lace. Good-looking stuff. Bigger body. Smooth, crisp lighter carbonation. Just a light stickiness in the finish. Huge resiny, dank, lightly piney aroma. Some tropical fruit - pineapple, earthy, herbal notes. Some big roasted malt, light dark chocolate, big bitter taste. Some black cherry, maybe. Nice light zesty sweetness, too. Awesome, big assertive black IPA. Also, best beer name ever. Delicious.

Draught. Pours a darn near black color with a moderate light tan head. Nose has some great floral and piney hoppiness to it and just a hint of roasting. Taste is hop dominant and quite bitter, with a small amount of roasting. One of the hoppier black IPAs I’ve had.

DConMan (114) - Ballwin, Missouri, USA - AUG 17, 2012
Enjoyed on-tap @ Country Boy Brewing in Lexington, KY for $5.50. Tapped from a Creative Wooden Carved Tap Handle (they all are like this here) into a 16oz Pint Glass. Aroma- Has a nice dry hopped, piney aroma through all the malts. Very sweet after this and malty. Like a Black IPA should be. Appearance- Received with a .5 finger, dark tan head that has average retention. Has the deepest brown body with no clarity. Leaves a few suds behind. Flavor- Has a very strong hop flavor through all of these malts. Black malts are one of the most dominate characteristics and very well pronounced. Bready, hoppy, and light bitterness. Overall Flavor, Good! Mouthfeel- Light-Medium Bodied, Moderate Carbonation, Malty, and finishes with a bit of subtle hop closure. Overall Impression- A really well balanced Black IPA! I do enjoy this style more and more each time I have it (when the hops are strong). Recommend!

Draft sample at CB. Poured clear black color with an average frothy light brown head that lasted and produced excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy complex toasted earthy hop aroma. Medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate duration. This is a very good beer.
