1977 vintage. Oak, all sorts of other rotting wood, funk, earthy. Hazy, dark brown, small, creamy, beige head. Medium bitter. Loads of alcohol, dark malts, dark berries, funk, berry tart, soft carbonation, medium bodied, alcohol in the in the finish. Amazing for this age, still very decent palate. Bottle shared with Chris and Ann at Bitter Virtue, Southampton. Vintage 1993. Label states ’Brewed in the UK, Courage, Staines, Middlesex’. Pours deep brown-black with very little head. Aroma of old leather. Tastes of chocolate, prunes, raisins, plums, dark fruits, berries. Like a fine old Port. Very little carbonation left, but it is still delicious.

UPDATED: AUG 17, 2017

Nov 2015 - Nip bottle shared at Paul’s 10K tasting. No ABV stated. As ’Courage Russian Imperial Stout’. This 1977 vintage was brewed by "Courage Limited" rather than the brewer currently stated on RB. Black, decent foamy tan head, dotted lacing. Aroma is meaty, wet dog, cheddar and dark chocolate. Aged, and not that inviting. Body is medium, smooth, rounded. Taste is earthy, chocolate, plastic, rubber, woody and slightly sour. A complex flavour. Nice, and still drinkable after all this time. Has always been a big want, and was very interesting to dry - didn’t disappoint. (3.4)

July 2017 - Another 1977 vintage shared at Leighton’s. Black with a foamy brown head. Looks great for an old-timer. Aroma is cola, bretty, slight mint. Body is smooth with soft carbonation. Taste is again brett-led, minty and dry. There has to be a brett element here that wasn’t in the previous bottle I opened – and it really helps the carbonation and flavour on this oldie. Impressive for a 40 year old beer. (3.7)

Bottle big thanks to Dirty Danny at my 10K tasting. It pours pretty much black with a decent tan head. The nose is rich, umami, must, sweet dark fruit, fruit cake, dark chocolate, risen chocolate chew, marmite and light oxidised notes. The taste is rich, oily, bitter roast, dark chocolate, umami, chewiness, light ash, some oxidised notes, salted caramel, liquorice and marmite with a dry, rich finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Has aged pretty well actually. Not bad.
