Pours a very dark brown with two fingers of tan head. Aroma has dark fruits and slight roast. More fruit though. Flavor reverses that and is more roasty than I expected. Medium to full bodied and finishes drier than I expected. Very nice beer.

2012 vintage, bottle #046950 of 210,000. Pours opaque black with lots of bubbling along the glass and a 1-finger tan head that dissipated quickly. Deep, rich aroma with notes of coffee and chocolate. Body is full, with some oily thickness and a touch of booziness in the finish. Flavor of roasty coffee with a light fruity note underneath. The roasty tone lingers on the tongue in the finish.

Sampled at Big Brew Beer Festival (Morristown). Poured a thick black color with a creamy tan head. Aroma of booze, dark fruit, and rich dark chocolate. Taste of dark fruit, rich dark chocolate, caramel, and a hint of booziness.

not at all harsh and with little alcohol this brew is smooth and with lighter flavor of cocoa, coffee and lighter on the spice aspect. fuller body is nice and altogether pleasant.

Bottle at home from Tesco’s. Extremely dark brown with a bit of tan head. Aroma of rosewater and lavender, roast malt, fine coffee. A bit of light fruitiness adds to the aroma’s complexity. The taste is mouth-watering sweetness tempered with light bitterness on the tongue. The many flavours are asserted throughout the taste profile without overpowering at any point. Maybe a tiny, tiny bit too much bitterness in the finish, otherwise perfect. The best beer I’ve had in years.

Bottle - very dark brown with tan head. Impressive aroma of roasted malts, caramel, chocolate, liquorice, dark fruit. Full bodied, sweet, sour, bitter, excellent mouthfeel. Nice bitterness in the long finish. Well hidden alcohol, just a slight warming. Can’t believe it was being sold reduced to £1 at Tesco. Excellent.

2011 bottle. Black with a tan head. Chocolate, caramel and coffee in the nose. Very smooth coco/coffee flavor with a slight bitterness at the end. Wow this is good.

UPDATED: FEB 22, 2014 Draft version tasted a few days ago in New York at Rattle n Hum. Delicious and very full-tasted, bitter matching the heavy body. Chocolate, treacle, a slight musty note from good age on it. Absolutely first class, still the standard to beat.

From 12oz bottle to snifter. Pour is a dark brown color, with a thick khaki head. You can tell how thick this beer is even just in the pour. Nose is insane; huge coffee, espresso, heavily roasted malt, leather, molasses, black licorice, chocolate. Also lighter notes of fruit. Taste is a heavy body, sour mostly but sweet notes coming through to round it out. Thick motor oil texture, but an unbelievable balance. Sometimes these beers can be overpowering, this one is dangerously drinkable. Amazing beer.
