Cask conditioned at Peterborough Beer Fest ’13. Black with slight cream head. Super smooth but highly alcoholic in character, lots of plummy fruit notes, some coffee, some liquorice. Heavy old stuff, but worth the effort.

Aug 2013 - Cask at GBBF, half pint. Black with hardly any head. Smell - some crayon, roasted barley, slight bubblegum. Body is medium with low carbonation. Taste - aniseed, coffee, roasted barley and a liquorice finish. A bit vegetal. Good balance for a beer this strong. I wasn’t that fussed on it overall though. (3.6)

Nov 2015 - Bottle share thanks to Paul - 2012 vintage, bottle #172645, 10%. To compare with the 1977 vintage opened at the same time. Black, small white head. Aroma is chocolate syrup, touch of yeast. Body is medium, tingly carbonation, smooth. Taste is chocolate, yeasty, twiggy bitterness. Smooth, rounded. Decent. (3.7)

Black with tan head. Aroma of coffee, roast, dark caramel, Sherri. Taste of roast, coffee, chocolate, Sherri, burnt sugar. Oddly light for such a heavy beer. Warm alcohol going down the throat.
