UPDATED: OCT 24, 2016 Bottle sample at the tasting. Thanks zvikar. Pours opaque dark brown, almost black, with a tan creamy head. Rich and pleasant aroma of roasted malts, caramel, coffee and cocoa. Taste – sweet malt, dark chocolate, dried fruits, brown sugar, bitter finish with a hint of smoke, delicious brew. Palate – smooth and creamy, very dense with a full body. Great beer. UPDATED: AUG 16, 2013 Bottle from Kris Wines. 2012 Vintage. Opaque black, tan head that disspates to nothing. Nose is Marmite, salty, pure dark chocolate, dark fruit esters, prune, raisin, antique wood, rum, alcohol. Taste is, similar to the Thornbridge version of the recipe. It’s quite hard, very alcoholic, caramel, ale fruity, roasted malt, little salty, dark bitter chocolate, roast coffee, lots of black treacle, pear wine. It’s very distinctive but maybe not as smooth and soft as many modern Impy Stouts. Also quite dry. I find this a little too hard and maybe not so complex as others, so palate score only gets a 3 from me. However, will keep a bottle to age as I think it will soften. 3.5 bottled rating
Cask rating at GBBF 2013. Opaque very very dark brown, off white head. Nose is roasted malt, golden syrup, dark choc, little bit of ale fruity, slight estery, cereal grain. A lot going on in this. Taste is medium bodied, roasted malt, light dark chocolate, very light dark fruit, aromatic. Very dangerously drinkable. 4.2.

Roasty aroma, pretty powerful, with espresso, dark chocolate, a bit of soy sauce and a bit of alcohol. Sweetish flavor of dark chocolate, a bit of soy sauce notes, some espresso and light licorice notes. Full-bodied, silky rounded mouthfeel. A very good Imperial Stout. 275 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 9/19/2024. Pours nearly pitch black color with a 2-3 finger dense and fluffy tan head with incredible retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, light char, coffee, dark bread, and roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark and roasted malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, char, coffee, dark bread, light raisin, licorice, and roasted earthiness. Lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, char, coffee, dark bread, licorice, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Excellent balance and complexity of dark and roasted malt flavors with light fruitiness; with big robustness and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a creamy, slick, fairly chalky, and lightly prickly mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming noticed after the finish; very smooth to sip on for 10%. Overall this is a highly excellent imperial stout! A - Pours the darkest of browns with a thin mocha head morphing into a thin wispy ceiling of micro bubbles.
S - Yeasty dark breads, pumpernickel, raisins, fig jam,
T - Roasted creamy malts, toasted cocoa, firm woody bitterness, brown raisin bread, roasted figs, smoked malts, molasses, cold espresso, finishes with a nirvana mix of fruit bread, caramelized brown sugar, bitter hops, espresso, anise, doughy brown bread.
M - Low carbonation, dense creamy feel, medium weighted body.
Very complex and delicious. The roast takes a backseat and lets the raw heavy malt play out with the yeast. Very raw, bold flavors delicately interweaved together. Wish it came in a bigger bottle.

Bottle - Pours very dark brown w/ brown head, lots of retention. Smells of chocolate, roasted malts, and coffee. More rich, creamy chocolate in the taste plus some coffee, dark malt, and so dark fruit at the end.
