Bottle 330ml from Purvis. Masterpiece, full marks for me. Aromas of chocolate, nuts, and vanilla, hints of liquorice. Taste is sweet and bitter, with very long length. Palate is creamy, and full bodied. Black, with a frothy head. SanfordBrewer (1610) - Sanford, Florida, USA - JUN 21, 2012
opaque black with a thick tan head. slightly creamy medium-full body with medium carbonation.Namlig (12) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 11, 2014
aroma: chocolate, licorice, black roasted barley or malt, and some silage. i do get the pear.
taste: foam is sweet and chocolaty, beer tastes much like it smells, but with a leafy and woodsy whole hop character. much more balanced than our american examples, and more sessional, but every bit as complex. with less hop bitterness and burnt astringency, the other flavors can all come through in a complex harmony.
UPDATED: FEB 22, 2014 Draft version tasted a few days ago in New York at Rattle n Hum. Delicious and very full-tasted, bitter matching the heavy body. Chocolate, treacle, a slight musty note from good age on it. Absolutely first class, still the standard to beat.

275ml dark bottle from Tesco. Four for £5 deal. Un-fucking-believable. The best beer in the world at a knock down price. I got a bunch of these. Some I have kept and drunk, others I gave away as Christmas presents. And what better present to give someone, eh? One of the best beers in the world. Possibly the best. Very complex aroma and flavor of walnut/pecan, pears in brandy, campfire, dried fruit with a hint of green olive, roast coffee and cream, vanilla and figs.
Finish is quite lengthy, and the overall effect is elegant, layered and restrained, while at the same time ebullient.
A marvelous tribute to the granddaddy of all Imperial Russian Stouts.
