Decent and very drinkable. Very light and mild. Finishes with a brief fruity taste. Crisp tasting, but not too much on flavor.
July 29th, 2014 - Creekside Brewing is a cozy little place, perched next to the somewhat parched looking creeping winding through a slice of downtown San Luis Obispo. The cooling effect of the trees and water was a welcome respite from the sun’s battering rays, but the prospect of a few beer samplers was not unwelcome either. I started with there Hefe Wessen (not Hefeweizen, apparently), a murky, dark straw colored brew that flirts with the idea of going all the way down to a light amber. The head persists even in the miniature glass, a foamy layer to layer on the upper lip. The aroma is the traditional suite of clove and banana, with a tiny bit of band-aid, a phenol that sounds worse than it was. It expressed more like a poolside brew, though it strayed from the traditional scents of the style. The body has a slow and low carbonation, and the wheat taste is understated. Instead, the flavor is sickly sweet, with overripe banana and the attending taste of fermented fruit creeping across the tongue. It’s a little much to handle, but not gross - just strong in an off-putting way. IrishBoy (4200) - Bakersfield, California, USA - AUG 13, 2014
Draft at the brewery. Nose is light banana, cloves, and bubblegum. Lightly hazy yellow with a small white head. Flavor is peppery, lightly sweet and bitter. dwyerpg (6187) - Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - OCT 6, 2012
Actually smells pretty good. Too bad that’s all. Flavor starts okay with some fruit and wheat but then it gets pretty sour. Unclean lines? Also sticky at the end. Not good. anders37 (26657) - Malmö, SWEDEN - JUL 27, 2012
Draft @ the brewpub. Pours a Pours a hazy golden orange color with a small white head. Has a fruity wheat malty spicy banana aroma. Fruity wheat malty spicy banana flavor. Has a fruity wheat malty spicy banana finish. SamGamgee (2452) - down the whirlpool, California, USA - MAY 24, 2009
Draught at the brewpub, though it was spelled "Hefe Weissen" on the board. Light hazy gold with a creamy white head. Aroma of wheat, cloves, faint banana, and floral perfume. The flavor is crisp and lightly sweet with a nice clove spice. Wheat shows in the flavor, but there is no tartness and fruity esters are less obviously banana driven, making a drier, spicier profile. Light bodied with prickly carbonation. A well attenuated, crisp, and very drinkable beer. I like that the esters are restrained, which is often not the case with brewpub bavarian wheat beers in my experience.
