When our brewers decided to craft our first ever ale, they wanted it to be extraordinary. They chose one of the oldest and rarest ale styles in the world, a Dusseldorf-style altbier or "old beer". To honour the authenticity of this rare beer style, we collaborated with Zum Schlussel, a brewing institution in Dusseldorf for over 160 years and one of four original breweries known for this style. Not only did they share their vast knowledge of making an altbier but they also shared their special strain of yeast with us. True to style, the result is a dark mahogany hued beer with roasted nutty malt flavour and an intensifying hop finish.

473 ml can. Pours a dark reddish colour with a light tan head. Aromas of malt and caramel . Taste of malt, caramel, nut and grassy hops. A decent enjoyable beer

BrewWhatIWant (257) - Ontario, CANADA - SEP 13, 2017
Pours a light reddish brown with a decent offwhite head. Aroma is herbal hops. Taste is a little bitter, a little sour, and a little sweet. Flavours are relatively mild with notes of earthy hops, nutty malt, and a little fruit. Body is medium and carbonation is low-moderate. It's a relatively well balanced ale similar to an English bitter.

Enjoyed this a lot! It was only after the fact they are owned by MOLSON! So that was a bit disappointing, but still a nice beer.

473ml can. Clear copper with a foamy off-white head. Flavors are toasted bread/cereals, grain husks, dark fruits, chocolate and brown sugar with nutty, herbal and mineral notes. Light to medium body, moderate carbonation, smooth texture

Pours clear dark copper with a foamy tanned head. Aroma is nuts and carmel malts. Smooth mouthful and low carbination makes it very easy to drink. Good beer.

Light clear russet brown. Densish fluffy off white head. Malty. Sweet. A bit simple. Ok.

Canned. Aroma of yeast, the body is weak and the flavor is light. Overall a weak beer.

Note: 6/10

Pours deep red amber with a nice pillowy off white sudsy head. I’d give it a 5 for appearance... but it’s filtered. Nose of caramelized bread pans... yeast...even a little whiff of smoke and mild berry. Initially came across as a bit sweet, but it’s passable. Clean bready malts, with hints of smoke, cocoa, dried cherry, and some minerals. Hops are quite mild. Earth and tea tannins. Cut dried grass. It’s an altbier but it doesn’t taste like they would make it in the past. Too refined. It’s good though.

341ml bottle stolen from my step-dad (thanks!) Pour is mahogany. Caramel, roasted grain and nuts, hay, mineral water. There's a faint spicy hop presence, a crisp, bitter finish, but I give this a passing grade mostly for being unremarkably drinkable. I'm with Tiki below: I don't mind these guys, but their product line could use some diversity. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
