The aroma is sugary malts with sweet tart sourness and vinous alcohol. It’s a bit subdued.
The flavor is sweet and tart fruity sourness with vinous alcohol and a touch of roast in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with soft carbonation.
Overall, a nice sour. It’s a a little on the sweet side.
Bottle. Pours dark black, small tan head, dissipates fairly quickly, decent lacing. Aroma is dusty, acetic, funky, some window cleaner, a bit of chocolate, brandy. February 2nd, 2013 - The third and final variant of Crooked Stave’s Nightmare on Brett on tap today is the Brandy. The Bourbon impressed, the Cognac surprised, and the Brandy rounds out a stellar tasting experience that has both me and my palate on the back of my heels, reeling from the booze and cacophony of awesome flavors. The brandy experience begins with a sugary, sweet smell familiar to anybody who’s participated in a good old fashioned camping expedition complete with s’mores and burnt stick ends. It’s graham crackers and bubbling, brown marshmallow blobs. The flavor is far sharper, stabbing and wielding the sharpness of heavy alcohol and the caustic personality developed while biding its time in the inside of a brandy barrel. Chocolate malt fills in after the brandy fever has died down, bringing with it maple and smoked malt notes. Leaning back and gazing across the line of empty tasting glasses, it’s easy to conclude that while these are all mighty powerful brews, they’re damn good drinking. Bottle: Poured a light black color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and some light lacing. Aroma of tart notes with some funky yeast notes and light dry roasted malt. Taste is also dominated by tart notes with some acidity and dry roasted malt notes. Brandy notes are pretty tame and hard to distinguish. Body is light with medium carbonation. bottle shared by tom10101, thanks dude! hazy medium dark brown pour with a reviving light beige head, some lacing. dense chocolate, tart cherries, maple syrup sweetness, never cloying, light acidity - complex lactic and acetic, fairly spicy too. moderate carbonation, medium body - oily and slightly sticky, lightly tart, grassy-spicy and lightly astringent finish. better treatment than grand cru.

Bottle (375 ml). Thanks to Mark for this one! Dark reddish brown with a small beige head and some lacing. Aroma is quite fruity (mostly berries) along roasted malt, acidic notes, hints of alcohol and oak notes. Taste is quite fruity too (berries and grapes) along roasted malt, moderate sourness, oak and brandy. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Slightly vinous mouthfeel. Moderately warming finish. Pours very dark brown/black with low beige head. Some lacing. Aroma is of black cherries, roasted malt, chocolate, alcohol. Taste is of black cherries, sourness, grapes, dark fruits, some tannins. Pours a dark brown and is topped by a light beige rim that leaves nice lacing. Nose is of dark fruits and alcohol, simple but effective. Taste is of brandy, chocolate and fruity with a tart edge. Alcohol shows slightly but what do you expect from a brandy barrel aged beer? Anyway, it is slightly hot like it should and vinous with a medium level of carbonation. 375mL thanks to unclerudy. Clear deep brown red with coffee, weak foam with spotty lace. Subtle hazelnut chocolate cake nose, not much impending acid is nice. Small hints of brandy but barely. Sharp cranberry and flashes of balsamic. Taste is lactic, tangy, lots of lime and salt. Bright and quenching. Doesn’t really matter what barrel, this base sour brown is fantastic.
