Cucapá Barleywine
This English style barleywine has a dark reddish mahogany color. A rich, thick entry leads to a very sweet molasses and chocolate covered citrus flavors. Finishes with a mild, bittering hop fade.

fata2683 (2202) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - MAR 28, 2011
sampled during the 2011 RBWG weekendthanks to Craig for this, probably the strongest Mexican beer I’ll ever have. Pours ruby brown with a medium off white head. Aroma is caramel, toffee, candied sugar and nuts. Flavor is caramel all the way, not overly sweet, there is some fig/apricot fruityness as well but it’s a big malty beer.

Bottle at RBWG Grand Tasting 2011. Pours clear orange/tawny, thin pale tan head, no lacing. Nose is sweet marmalade and toffee, florals, orange blossom. Flavours of oranges, toffee, brandy, booze. This was fine enough, above-average for a Mexican brew, certainly!

22-Jan-11 (750-ml bottle: Purchased 13-May-09 for $10.99 at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA) Shared at a friend’s birthday party, this beer was one of the big hits. It pours a clear, amber-brown color with an inch of bubbly, beige head that settles to a wide, creamy ring and a dusting. The malty aroma is nicely balanced between toast and caramel, with a developed bouquet of caramel candy, buttered toast, cocoa, earth, and mushrooms. On the palate, the beer is sweet, caramely and candy-like, but not sugary in any way. Cocoa and milk chocolate are balanced by a touch of tart, dried fruits like apricots and prunes. The beer is fairly earthy and woodsy from cellaring, and overall, the sweetness is nicely balanced with earth and light tartness. Medium-full in weight, and though sweet in flavor, it’s still dry and gently acidic for superb balance and drinkability for a barley wine. Light-medium carbonation on the palate, but a crucial touch of light acidity makes up for it, giving the beer a nice refreshing quality. A ring of lacing rests above several patches of foam. Overall, this is a superb English-style barley wine, and it has cellared wonderfully. It was such a terrific beer, I’m really happy I was able to share it with such a beer-smart crowd, which included brewers, bar managers, beer retailers, and craft beer aficionados.

Hopper (827) - San Antonio, Texas, USA - JAN 17, 2011
750 ml green bottle from Jimbowood. Pours a thick auburn brown with a decent looking head. The aroma has molasses, figs, plums, dark fruit skins, and a dash of chocolate. Full carbonation. The taste has a very tea like quality. In fact it smells like tea after I got that aspect from the taste. I have to admit this is probably the smoothest 10% ABV barleywine I have had. Just so smooth and easy drinking. I was a little impressed.

Blind rating at New Year’s Eve Blind Barleywine tasting. 5 ounce sample. Bottle purchased at the Davis Food Co-Op. The bottle was about a year old. Vinous, slightly metallic, and a little fruity in the nose. Some citrus and scant booze is also present. Transparent amber body with a decent tan head and really nice lacing. Light astringent tartness to start, but it then becomes chewy, sweet, and caramelly in the middle. Finishes with a nice sweetness. I am really digging the chewy, caramel notes in the body of this. The ethanol is well-hidden. Unfortunately, the astringency to start is a little wack. Otherwise, this is a really solid beer.

Hophead22 (2879) - Redlands, by way of Wisconsin,, California, USA - NOV 7, 2010
750ml bottle. Rating #112. Dark red with a nice glow too it and a thin light tan head. Very rich sweet caramel aroma, really very nice, just how I expect a barleywine to smell. Nice bitterness too it, more sweet caramel with a nice little booze kick in the finish, a very enjoyable beer. (1422)

A solid pour into my 25cl tulip glass produces a two-finger thick, richly amber tinged, tan colored head. The beer is a dark amber / red color that shows a brilliantly clear, cranberry-red hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of caramel coated hazel nuts and concentrated dried fruit laden holiday sweet breads. Some light herbal notes in the finish hint at once more present hop aromas and there is a light, almost caramelized / candied citrus character barely noticeable in the finish (this was clearly never an overly aggressively hopped Barley Wine though). At off angles this beer does pick up a solid menthol and herbaceous hop character, though this can be somewhat fleeting. Notes of something like allspice, intermingle with a really rich, toasted maltiness that has aged into a really nice nutty quality. The aroma is actually somewhat muted for what I would expect from a Barley Wine, but it is really nice and complex.

Thick and rich feeling as it hits my tongue, it has a light’ish sweetness that is mostly caramelized up front, but it finishes with a really unexpected, phenolic smokiness. I don’t think the smokiness was intended here, but it is just harsh enough that it could be from Peat-smoked malt, but my guess is that something else has taken hold here. The smokiness leans a bit towards plastic at times, though it is not so strong that it dominates everything in this beer. This has a nice, light herbal character here; somewhat grassy, not really quite menthol like, with the aged malt it really sort of reminds me of tobacco and perhaps some leather notes. There is a fairly solid bitterness here, but this is clearly a malt accented beer as this is what dominates the finish and palate; the beer clings to the palate long after each sip with a rich caramelized heft and this is clearly a sipping, contemplative brew.

A bit weird in the end; the smoky plastic character is definitely a bit out of place and it might explain why the aroma was a bit more muted than I expected. Still this is actually fairly enjoyable & even the smokiness adds something at times.

Bottle from City Beer. Pours dark caramel with a sweet nutty aroma and virtually no head. There is a burnt slightly sweet malt flavor with a bitter finish.

Had from 750 ml bottle from Hi Time Wines. Pours ruby brown with no head and very slight carbonation. Lacing is good. Aromas of sugar, fruits, raisin, toffee, malts, and caramel. Taste is similar, very sweet, overpowering sugars and fruits. Heavy alcohol flavor with lots of malts and toffee. Finishes sweet. Not my favorite style, but I have had better barley wines. An ambitious beer from Mexico though.

The aroma is sweet English style barleywine with caramel covered red apples, prunes and dates as well as some yummy molasses. The taste is smooth and sweet with malts, caramel and some muted yet bitter pine hops. It seems to smell like an English style but tastes like the hoppy American style barleywine. Very nice stuff either way in my book.
