Aroma is fig, roasted malts, chocolate, coffee and light tart. Taste is right roasted and toasty malts, caramel, chocolate, licorice and dark sugar. Light tartiness on tip. Well balanced and smooth finishing overall. Appearance is black with a thin pearl head that retains fairly well. redpooba (406) - Texas, USA - MAR 19, 2013
A black beer with an off-white head. The beer is low on aroma but the body is medium with a thick licorice flavor. Tastes like a tootsie roll without the coco nibs. A decent off category stout. jb (3221) - Rochester, New York, USA - DEC 14, 2012
On tap at Tap and Mallet. This one had to follow 12.12.12, a beer I loved, and it still stood up well on its own. Yes, the licorice dominates, both in smell and taste, but still that is not all there is to this, standard toasted malt notes. A nice session stout. On tap at Tap and Mallet. Pours black with a small tan head that recedes steadily. String lacing on the glass. Aroma of anise and malt. Medium body with a strong black licorice character along with some malt and coffee notes. The finish is all licorice. This is likely a love it or hate it beer, and being a fan of licorice I really enjoyed it.
