Bottle courtesy of tkrjukoff. Pours dark blackish brown with no head worth mentioning. Smell is slightly sweet and malty with roasted malts, raisins, high quality dark chocolate, rum, charred wood, vanilla fudge, moist soil, sweet liquorice candy, hay and hints of roasted coconuts. Taste is tiny sweet and sour with roasted malts, lemon juice, dry apple cider, dark roast coffee, bitter chocolate, moist soil, charred wood, rum soaked raisins and lemon zest. Mouthfeel is round, velvety, creamy and near full bodied. finish is bitter and sour with roasted malts, bitter chocolate, lemon juice, dry apple cider, rum soaked raisins, burnt caramel and lemon zest. I can see how this could be a great beer, pity it’s infected!

Bottle at "Darkness comes to town", 131116. Pitch black beer with a small brownish head. Malty caramel aroma, nutcreme, toffee, roasted, chocolate, cocoa powder, licorice, tar, some raisins. Sourish caramel flavor, raisins, solvent notes, chocolate, lemon peels, hay, geapefruit, some candy. Too sour, something probably went wrong here.

Swingtop growler, shared by John. Dark brown, slight red color. Thin khaki head. Dots of lace, mostly loose. Bigger body. Smooth, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. A lot of rum flavor in this, tastes like someone poured actual rum into an imperial stout. Not bad, but a bit over-the-top. Moderate bitter, some alcohol warmth, light hint of tart. Tastes like 14-15%. Enjoyable stuff, but maybe a bit over done with the barrel.

Growler, thanks to captiveodyssey, 11/2/2013. Pours thick black, thick tan mocha head settles to a nice crema on the surface. Aroma is dark chocolate, dosed with vanilla, molasses, and drizzled with dark fruity syrup, with great sweet fruity rum notes, lingering coffee and roast underneath. Taste is hazelnut chocolate, spicy caramel and strong rum, burnt brown sugar, booze. Thick body, just short of viscous. Really delicious.

Growler shared by a friend. Pours dark brown to black with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have some heat, barrel notes, roast, dark chocolate, coffee, good drinking beer that I’m glad to have tried.

Pours dark black with no head. There was only a weak ring that hugged my glass. In the aroma I picked up on mild vanilla, defined rum, oak, and chocolate malts. In the flavor there is fruit like coconut rum, chocolate bitter malts, roasted malts, sugar sweetner, and vanilla. Overall a fine beverage. I don’t taste any infection here but I think many ppl taste fruity rum and assume its infected.

Swing top bottle -- thanks to Kevin L for sharing these! Pours dark cola brown, minimal tan head. Aroma is straight, harsh rum. Seriously smells like a spirit, with some imperial stout on the side. Taste is basically a shot of rum with some chocolate underneath. Aside from the infected Rare DOS, I much preferred the Nooner, though I get the impression from others at the tasting that this batch may be something of an anomaly.

#2700. Thx to FlavioSP for telling me that the guys from the Mikkeller & To Øl @ Borefts 2013 were giving away this for free. Obv. thx to them for giving this away, I was taken a bit aback & they gave away a lot of other goodies as well during the festival. Sampled from a growler. I heard that a lot of these are infected in general & the rare which I also tried did have some issues but luckily this one wasn’t infected. Pours black with some mocha head only on the sides. Nose is huge vanilla, clear roast, smooth, maple syrup, creamy, touch vinous & molasses. Taste is slightly vinous, roast, syrup, caramel, brown sugar, clear roast, slight ash, grounded coffee beans, touch molasses, finish is warming & whilst not boozy, this clearly shows its ABV, barrel becomes a bit evident in the finish. Body is a bit on the lighter side for an RIS. A very nice beer but the hype for this one is completely inexplicable to me, I had better RIS’s at the festival. There is a lot of stuff that is better & way, way, way easier to get than this beer.

Growler pour from the Mikkeller booth at Borefts, 2013. Black with lace. Big nose of vanilla, chocolate, sweet and luscious. Roasty flavor of cola, chocolate, coconut, wood, vanilla. Great.
