Pours mahogany into an English pint. Offwhite micro head with excellent retention leaves film as it slowly recedes. Roasted malt aromas. Upfront sweet creamy caramel which pretty much stays through the finish. Fairly one dimensional -- was hoping for a little more bite, but certainly was able to drain the glass quite quickly.

500 ml bottle, bought in Scarborough. Possibly filtered, but probably not pasteurised. ABV is 5.3%. As a cask ale it was voted "Champion Winter Beer of Britain 1998". Chestnut coloured beer, rich off-white to beige head. Very nice malty aroma with oaky and vinous notes, also caramel and dark fruits. Malty flavour with caramel, some raisiny and vinous notes, moderate hops. Moderate carbonation, soft mouthfeel. A pleasant beer to drink.

Location: 500 ml bottle from Gilly’s, 4/21/09

Aroma: Nose is mostly dark fruity hops, with the malts, and caramel scents in there as well
Appearance: Reddish brown, dark looking beer
Flavor: Nice sweetness to this one, similar to the nose, except the caramel and malts are slightly stronger and the fruit fades in and mixes with the rest of the flavors
Palate: Medium body, drinks pretty nicely and quickly
Overall Impression: I thought this one was pretty nice, a good flavor, and a smooth drink. A little lighter then I would have guessed from the appearance. Overall though, a very nice beer.

Decent beer. Poured with a tan head that quickly settled down and no lace. Color is a lovely clear medium red amber. Aroma is very malty roast toffee and a hint fruity. Flavor is like aroma. Body is ok and so is carbonation. Finish is like flavor and medium in length. Serviceable beer. If you were in the mood for a straightforward malty ale this could be a session.

Dark red-amber with a long lasting head and thick lace. Solid sweet caramel malt with overtones of sorghum molasses and biscuit. As it moves through the palate a smooth floral hop bittering provides a cleansing balance. At the finish, sweetness re-emerges. An excellent beer.

030116. This English dark ale is a drop worth hunting down as it is loaded with flavour and carries a long strong finish. I picked up this 500ml bottle at Cool Wine in Hobart a few months back and I am glad that I did. More malty than hoppy or bitter the beer pours a translucent copper colour with a thick head that settles and thins out after a while. There is caramel and some toffee aromas in the nose, with some vanilla hiding in the background. The flavour very much mirrors the aroma , with some spiced fruit thrown into the mix, and the beer while initially thin in the mouths builds to a creamy mouthfeel. At 5.3% ABV it is certainly very drinkable.
