12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep orange amber/light copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy cream colored head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big honey, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, and toasted biscuit; with lighter notes of toffee, nuttiness, raisin, cherry, herbal, grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malts and light earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of big honey, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, and toasted biscuit; with lighter notes of toffee, nuttiness, raisin, cherry, herbal, grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/grassy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of honey, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/toffee, dark fruit, herbal, grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malts and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Slight dryness from lingering bitterness as well. Fairly clean lagering, not too fruity/yeasty. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden, only a mild warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a very nice malt liquor style. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malts and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; very smooth, clean, and easy to drink for the ABV. Reminds me more of an imperial amber ale or something, but still very enjoyable.

Sample at the Seventh Son Tap Invasion at Daily Growler on 12/11/2013. Pours a clear copper-orange color with a thin white head that evaporates steadily to an outer ring. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of grainy malt and hops. Medium to full body with flavors of malt, mildly spicy rye and earthy hops. The finish is sweet with a malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

Dryer brew, not sure if its a lager or not, slight roastiness and spice, not ultra boozy.

Tap: Dark Horse malt liquor? Couldn’t pass it up. Hazy orange & copper-ish, darker in hue than expected with a fizzling, off-white head with decent retention. Aroma includes faint grains, light oranges, dusty & spent hops, & some back-end citrus-y fruits that are hard to pinpoint. Taste is subtly fruity as well, with flavors that remind me of orange & strawberry flavored Pez candy. Faint citrus splashes, too, with some heavy grains & an abrasively toasted & bready finish that comes on rather abruptly. I didn’t know this had toasted rye until after I tried it... that explains it. Unexpected, but actually quite tasty & quaffable - no sign of 9% ABV.

On tap at Michigan Fall Beer Fest. Pretty much what you would think. Has that cheap taste, maybe what they were going for? Nice mix up by Dark Horse nonetheless.

Tap pour at DH Brewery - medium orange color with little to no head. Aroma is sweet with a touch of rye and a hint of corn - very malt forward as one would expect for the style. Flavor is similarly sweet, but this is very tasty with no off-flavors or odd character that one might expect with your garden variety gas station ML - good stuff actually. Palate is light to medium bodied and an easy drinker - if they put this brew in tall boys or 40s, it would be an easy buzz, as the ABV doesn’t reflect on the palate. Complex, no...would I have again...absolutely!

Draft at brewery, gimmie some malt liquor! The pour is a bright golden orange. The aroma has a sweet undertone. The taste is nice. Light and sweet. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
