Flight on tap at Tribes (Mokena, IL). Pours a dulled golden pour, some touches of amber, almost homemade applesauce hued with a frothy offwhite head that films small and laces ok. Aromas are gentle fruity esters, banana and faint orange, apple and gentle floral and earthy hops. Gentle with flaked wheat, touches of spice, faint white pepper. No coriander amounts which is a change of pace. More Hefe than Wit in the wheat profile. Mellow. Initial is lighter bodied throwing some crisp dry hops up front, citrusy and floral, mellow grass provides a decent dryness up front. Middle moves into some mellow fruit and flaked wheat. Banana seems the driver, with some gentle clove, touches of citrus. Hop dryness and bitterness mix well with a gentle wheat driven sweetness, light fruit and clove into the finish with a decent lingering hop presence. Overall, this worked well. The flavors weren’t clear and bright, but it was a nice drinker, something I could get behind.. Though the ABV is a little cumbersome (though you can’t taste it, sounds like a harder sessioner). Surprised me, especially after a more mediocre aroma. Silphium (3199) - Traverse City, Michigan, USA - OCT 9, 2011
On tap at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Murky, earthy, pulpy bright orange body, thin off-white head. Nose of mostly banana and clove with only modest hops. Body a medley of banana, circus peanuts, and clove balanced by leafy, bitter hops, more hefeweizen than wit. Sweet, complex, and tasty.
