12 oz blue waxed bottle into a Founders 15th Anniversary glass. Bottle #275 of 888, Batch #3406. I can’t thank Steimie enough for this beer!
A - Pours a near black body. Holding it up to the light shows some ruby edging but this is one dark ass barleywine. No real head to speak of, just some thick khaki edging with large bubbles. A swirl coats the glass in a long lasting alcohol lace with bits of foam. This falls down the sides ever so slowly. For a normal barleywine this looks great, but for one that is somewhere around 17%....well, color me impressed.
S - Starts off with sweet raisins and burnt caramel, then comes a huge wave of savory something. Its not quite at the level of soy sauce, but its certainly savory. Leather, bitter dark chocolate, and candied peaches. Booze, booze, and more booze. The smell is overwhelming, confusing, and exciting.
T - Raisins, caramel, molasses, chocolate, leather and maple syrup. Very syrupy and rich with just a touch of savory on the end. This is like drinking bourbon soaked raisinets. Finishes with some mild alcohol warmth, kind of like what you’d find in a well put together barrel aged beer. 17%? This is just lost upon me. Very sweet, but never "too much" or "cloying". Just the perfect level of decadent richness. The taste is just....perfection really.
M - Thick and syrupy with a bit of spritz. It is on low end of carbonation. Despite this, I find myself drinking this far too quickly.
O - This is what I wish Raison D’extra was like. Its syrupy, sweet, and rich beyond belief....but its just so damn tasty. I really enjoy high abv, highly attenuated, overly sweet booze bomb. This beer nails every bit of that to a T. The barleywine equivalent of Black Tuesday. Mittenator (1612) - Michigan, USA - FEB 25, 2013
Draft at brewery Pre-release summer 12'. One of the biggest beers I've tried. Massive sweetness, dried fruits, toffee and caramel. Would love to try the BB version because this one almost has those qualities already. Bacterial (3027) - Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA - JAN 5, 2013
Bottle shared by Greg - thanks! Dark pour, not quite black, but dark and thick. Nose is amazing, chocolate, vanilla and toffee. Mouthfeel is excellent just thick enough to coat your mouth and linger around. Somehow the massive ABV is totally hidden. DalzAle (2038) - Eden Prairie, Minnesota, USA - JAN 5, 2013
Bottle thanks to Woodchopper on BA! Dark tan pour, very little carbonation and a wonderful aroma of figs/plums, caramel and a little leather. Flavor is roasted nuts, candi sugar, herbs and a little sweet alcohol. Really nice and the alcohol is very hidden. I really dig this one! jmagnus87 (2912) - Rockford, Illinois, USA - OCT 15, 2013
Bottle sampled at a tasting. From notes. Boozy with dark fermented fruits, caramel and a hint of something earthy. Very awesome.

One year old bottle shared by Dave. What a great aroma! Dark molasses, a little teriyaki soy, and sweet black cherry. Pours thick viscous deep brown with no head and a little film. Taste follows the nose with a sweet sticky cherry molasses, licorice, and chocolate. Rich and delicious and world class. Obviously a little hot but the extreme taste balances out. koleminer20 (3798) - Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA - MAY 26, 2015
Enjoyed at an all barley wine tasting at Travis’s house on February 21. The pour is a dark brown with a tiny ring of off white head. This pours like syrup. There is no carbonation to be found at all. The aroma is great. There is a ton of dark fruits and brown sugar. The malts really take over about half way through, and the sugar really sweetens the back end. The flavor is also really heavy on the dark fruits. The brown sugar and roasted malts are awesome. The mouth feel is thick, sticky. There isn’t the carbonation to help this out, which would’ve been amazing. The aftertaste is lingeringly sweet with dark fruits. Really good, so I can’t imagine what the carbonation tasted like! Bottle at the 0-65% Tasting, London - thanks to Ken for procuring this beast. Pours pitch black with a tan cream head. Rich dark malt aroma with some dough, light cheese, dark chocolate. Huge sweet flavor with sticky sugars, toffee, light chocolate, figs, dates, lots of dark fruits in general. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Warm on the finish but nowhere nearly as hot as you might expect given the ABV. Lots of molasses, modest chocolate, dark fruits, raisins. Delicious beer. A real snifter-worthy sipper. Growler shared by b3shine. Poured clear dark brown color with an average to large frothy brown head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy dark sugar, toasted malt and alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Moderate to heavy dark sweet flavor with a medium to heavy dark sweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a complex standout beer. portableparty (2369) - Blaine, Minnesota, USA - JAN 5, 2013
12 oz. bottle split 3 ways. Thanks DalzAle! Pours deep black brown with a tiny wispy tan head. Aroma is sweet boozy sugar and dark fruit. Taste is sweet sugary syrup booze a little spice and bitterness and hints of chocolate raisins and fig. Palate is full sticky slick with a warm finish. Really nice!
