3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Half of a bottle that the owner of a local store got on his last visit to Marshall and very graciously split with me. There were only 7 left, they gave him this one, and the other 6 are going to GABF as part of Dark Horse’s first entry to GABF. Pours increadibly calm and dark oozing from the neck like oil and sits black with no activity. Aroma is all roasted malts, chocolate, and some coffee hiding the alcohol completely from the nose. Granted, this bottle is a couple years old since they haven’t brewed this in awhile so the advertised large wave of hops was not present in the aroma, or in the nose but it still has something going for it in its nice presentation of malts and dark fruits in the flavor. Sweet chocolate and roasted malt mixing with some raisin and a hint of some vanilla round out a beer that seems to have stood up pretty well. Other than the fact that there are no hop flavors or aroma I would say that the age has not added any off flavors. I understand that they are going to begin brewing this again this fall so I very much look forward to having this fresh.
12oz bottle picked up at South Lyndale Liquors and consumed in a snifter style glass. Pitch black in color with an assertive tan head. Aroma features plenty of chocolate and espresso like a chocolate-covered espresso bean. Nice roasty notes. Almost brings a peat like quality as it warms. Key to this one is allowing it to warm up a bit and fully unleash the imperial stout qualities to their fullest. Taste has a healthy dose of dark chocolate but with more sweetness than you find in some representations of this style. Roasty and warming...plenty of alcohol presence can be felt. Some caramel characteristics. Big and aggressive. Bitterness comes through towards the end. A really solid version of an imperial stout. I would sample again. mygeekway (230) - Grodków, POLAND - DEC 31, 2017
UPDATED: JAN 1, 2018 Intensywny zapach dominuje kawa. W smaku znowu kawa fajny palony finisz. Ciała niby trochę brakuje, ale smak to wynagradza. Finisz może ostry, ale ostre nuty palone kryją świetnie alk. SolarSam (110) - Interlaken, New York, USA - DEC 30, 2017
Ok. Now we have it. This seems like a real Imperial. I mean one that stands on its basic ingredients and delivers the goods. I don’t sense chocolate, coffee or coconut. Just real rich courageous malt doing what it does best!
Well Done!!! Yum. And thank you!

Opaque, tight lace.
Full body, silky texture, dense flavor, moderately hot mouthfeel, low carbonation, long aftertaste.
Restrained bitter, off-dry,
Assertive coffee flavor, vanilla, charcoal.
Pleasant but not top of the style.

Sporo gorzkiej czekolady, przypalonego ciasta, suszone czerwone owoce, jakby sherry. Fajnie zbalansowane między słodyczą a wytrawnością. Niemniej nic specjalnego,ot dobry imp stout

Bottle. Black pour without much head. Very thick texture, roasty, cocoa and coffee, a little sweetness as it warms, low carbonation. Simple but really solid, great imperial stout. Bitek (858) - Warszawa, POLAND - DEC 10, 2017
