Alengrin (4814) - BELGIUM - AUG 8, 2015
UPDATED: NOV 19, 2016 One of the elaborations of Embrasse, the Dochters quadrupel style ale, this one having been aged in Ardbeg barrels. Deep reddish bronze, hazy colour under a dense, frothy, yellowish beige head. Aroma has chocolate, bayleaf, caramel, banana, candied dates, caramel, medlar, overripe pear and wood, but is totally dominated by a very strong iodine smell representing the peat - way too much for my taste, I have nothing against peated whisky, but I cannot say I enjoy the smell of iodine. Sweet, candied taste, dates, banana, candied orange, very soft, full and fluffy mouthfeel, honeyish and caramelly malts, some earthy hops in the finish, drying woody tannins, a glow of warming whisky-like alcohol, lingering malt sweetness and even candi sugar sweetness, but most of all, that peat - iodine aroma returning retronasally - and ruining it for me. Interesting and complex for sure, but way too much iodine for my taste, reminding me of a Laphroaig barrel aged imperial stout from Jopen, which had the same issue for me.

Bottle. Murky brown color, tan head. Strong smoky, meaty aroma. Soy sauce flavor (umami) with smoke and salty notes. Medium-full body, medium carbonation. I really couldn't enjoy this at all: the meatiness was overpowering. And I *like* meat!
