In our hunger to explore the true taste of an original IPA, we went back to the very roots of IPA: England around 1830. This beer is made with 100% ’Maris Otter’ malt and East Kent Golding hop flowers (a lot!)

Then, to monitor the development of flavours during barrel-aging the beer is/will be bottled after: half a year; one year and one and a half year of barrel-aging (in Puligny Montrachet barrels). For comparison the beer is also bottled without the barrel aging.

So 4 batches will be released as an experiment. The release dates will be: End April 2014; end october 2014 and finally with the full 1 1/2 years of barrel-aging by the end of April 2015. I hope you enjoy a truly magnificant beer-style that was almost forgotten, but has a real revival lately.

Bottle with bronze wax - a few bottles with blue wax also exist. Silver wax is 1 year old, gold wax will be the 1.5 year old version.

50cl bottle 2014 Vintage bb04/2016, capped after less than ideal cellaring 07/2017. - Wonderfully preserved mature, malty and orange-jammy IPA with a lovely thick barrel character: tart apricots, noticeable of black vanilla (butter) and thickly spread yeastiness: in fact 1/10 of the bottle is gunky yeast which adds a textured fruitiness and tartness, becoming darker towards the bottom. Wet wood bough, herbal elements, soggy biscuit. - Not all of it drinkable, as so often with emphatically unfiltered DvdK bottelings. Still impressive that this has kept so long, befitting the aspired retro style.

UPDATED: JUN 25, 2016 Mooi oranjekleurig licht troebel bier met fijne witte schuimkraag. Fris aroma van sinaasappel, mandarijn, citrus. Mooie ronde volle smaak (abrikoos, perzik, beetje hout) met lange, licht bittere, warme afdronk. Zeer goed in balans. Alweer een topdochter.

500ml bottle. Cloudy, orangey, deep golden to amber colour with average, frothy, fairly lasting and lacing, off-white head. Sweaty, resinous, dank, fruity hoppy aroma, notes of pear, red berries, gooseberry, cautious oaky BA notes, a touch of vanilla. Taste is fruity and bitter hoppy, notes of gooseberry, grapes, a touch of pear, unripe pear, a minimally funky touch, dry oaky overtones. Still with rough edges, slightly unbalanced.

Drunk from 50cl bottle bought at Malting Pot in Brussels. Extremely bitter hoppy taste with strong head. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottled, courtesy of Arjen. Hazy golden colored, lasting medium head. Nose of British hops, hint of wood. Pretty bitter flavor, flowery hops, quite dry. Hops are not very pronounced in aroma, but overly present in flavor, thereby pushing away the other flavors. Not an entirely succesful experiment.

DutchMark (397) - NETHERLANDS - DEC 18, 2014
Nice! Interesting beer. Opague orange with a good head and just the right amount of carbonation. There is some floral sourness on the nose. The flavor is well balanced with floral notes, grapefruit, nice hop bitterness, some funky element and a bit of brett sourness. Texture is a bit oily and it has a long bitter sour aftertaste. Good stuff. Curious about the longer barrel versions.

Bottle kindly donated Benzai, many thanks man. Hazy orange golden color with medium white head. Yeast, citrus hops, salt, fruity tartness in aroma. Fruity taste (grapes) with caramel, brett, citrus hops, resin, oak. Frutty tart finish with light citrus hoppy bitterness.I don’t care which style this beer should be, but it’s well balanced tasty beer.

Bottle, bought @Etre Gourmet. Pours clear golden with a large, creamy, white head. Aroma has sweet malts, citrus, oak, vanilla, grass. Medium carbonation, fine dry and full mouthfeel. Flavour has good malty sweetness, grapes, apple, oak. Lingering heavy bitterness. Lovely elegance.
