In our hunger to explore the true taste of an original IPA, we went back to the very roots of IPA: England around 1830. This beer is made with 100% Maris Otter malt and East Kent Golding hop flowers (a lot!)

Then, to monitor the development of flavours during barrel-aging the beer is/will be bottled after: half a year; one year and one and a half year of barrel-aging (in Puligny Montrachet barrels). For comparison the beer is also bottled without the barrel aging.

So 4 batches will be released as an experiment. The release dates will be: End April 2014; end october 2014 and finally with the full 1 1/2 years of barrel-aging by the end of April 2015. I hope you enjoy a truly magnificant beer-style that was almost forgotten, but has a real revival lately.

Bottle with silver wax.
Bronze wax is 0.5 year old, gold wax will be the 1.5 year old version.

Aprikosenmann der erdig britischen Sorte. Elegant werden hier die Holzaromen in den Wonderbrew entlassen. Kantiger als das 1,5er. 0,15l vom Hahn im BROUWCAFE DE MOLEN:

Enjoyed at a tasting at Brians house on February 08. 500 mL (?) bottle. The pour is a darker golden orange with a thicker white head that falls to a dense cap with a couple spots of good lacing. The aroma is different. There is a heavy barrel on the front end. There is a funk to it, a tropical fruit, and maybe just a touch of tartness. There is a grassy, bitter hop on the back end before a hefty liquor comes in and flushes it all out. The flavor is much of the same. There is a lot of barrel and liquor with a heavy, grassy hop. The tropical fruits fall off quick, and its a little messy. Malts try to poke through on the finish. The mouth feel is thicker and more softly carbonated than youd want to see in an IPA. The aftertaste is bitter grassy hop and a lingering alcohol finish. This is not terrible, but needs some work.

Bottle, silver wax. Pours a clear golden beer with medium small bright white head on top. Aroma is vineous, lots of white wine, oaky notes, white fruits and slight booze. Flavor is light sour and has a lot of white wine influences, the hoppyness has faded in the background. Malty in the aftertaste, light carbonation and long light tarty aftertaste. Great balance, great stuff overall. Nice. one.

Bottled. 25cl sample. The aroma has toffee, bit earthy yeast, some grass, mandarins. Bit hazy, yellow coloured beer with a thin, white head. The taste is light-moderate bitter, light-moderate sweet, has toffee, manadarin, bit grass, oak. Medium-full mouthfeel. Very nice. I had the silver and the gold version separate, but within a week. It seems there was not much difference between them. Great stuff anyway.

500ml bottle (Bacchanalia, Cambridge)
Nice woody aroma, not so expressive. Medium palate, pleasantly carbonated. Very interesting fruity taste, apricot, some milkiness too, decent malty body too though, not lacking in that depearment. Later I get apricot in the aroma too, a bit marmaladey. Soft palate, nice sharpness from the barrel ageing, and some soft carbonation. Finish has a lovely soft dry woody bitterness. God, I love the apricot here. Happy to finish Marts glass for him, this is my kind of beer.

500 bottle (thanks FatPhil). Slightly hazy amber color. Huge size, fluffy beige head, stays. Fruity, citrus, malty, sweet, bit farty in aroma. Apricot, nutty, milky, grainy, woody, sourish in taste. Apricot, milky and woody in aftertaste. Soft carbonation. Faint caramel and nice delicate hops in late aftertaste. Nice fruity and dry mouthfeel. Medium herbal bitterness. Very nice brew.
