Of dark almost black chocolate color. Nose: musky, slightly sweet and spicy, Lots of chocolate , coffee and some hazelnut notes on the palate intermingling with notes of licorice. Very lively on the tongue! It finishes with a dry explosion of black espresso flavors.

MiP (16054) - Sønderborg, DENMARK - MAR 30, 2005
UPDATED: MAR 12, 2007 Bottle. Sweet, spicy liquorice aroma. Unclear, almost black colour. Very big, stable, creamy, light brown head. Very flavourful, roasted coffee. Also quite fruity and salty. Sweet coffeeish aftertaste, also very bitter. ABV is noticable in the finish, but not very clear before that. Very high carbonation.

Strangely dusky notes, along with chocolate and coffee. The aroma is complex. It’s so dark, the color could be black. The head is massive and it is persistent. The flavor is wonderful, but it is hard to describe. It starts with a surge of aroma, going to a slight hint of chocolate. There is an underlying sour component. Bitterness accompanies the malt, preventing sweetness. It’s wonderful, but not very simple.

From tap at Taphouse. Black with a small tan head. Aroma and flavour of roasted malt, coffee, fruit, caramel, chocolate and alcohol.

Ratman197 (15616) - Arvada, Colorado, USA - APR 23, 2006
Bottle poured a nearly opaque brownish black with a LARGE lasting tan head. Aromas of yeast, bitter chocolate, a bit of licorice and hints of dark fruit. Palate was light bodied and crisp. Flavors of sour yeast, bitter chocolate, light licorice and a hint of espresso with a lingering sweet finish. Not a bad stout but it needs more body.

Keg at La Capsule, Lille, France. Very dark brown with cream head. There is a full on darkly roasted malt body to this, quite heavy on the palate with a roast nut character. Quite complex with fruity hints and a light herby flavour then liquorice. Very enjoyable.

Bottle. Dark brown colour with a light brown head. Aroma is alcohol, sugar, roasted, candisugar. Flavour is smoked, oked, roasted, sugar, roasted coffee. Very nice beer.

UPDATED: JUL 3, 2013 Re-rate 6/26/13: Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel Florentin. Thanks zvikar. Black with a big light brown head. Aroma of Belgian yeast, roastiness and dark fruits. Roasty dry-ish flavor with dark fruits, coffee and burnt notes. Medium-bodied with strong carbonation. 6/4/7/3/14=3.4

(3/7/08) Bottle at ’t Brugs Beertje in Bruges. Black with a huge stable light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, a bit of coffee and some yeast. Roasty and very bitter flavor with burnt notes, some hops and spice. Medium to full body. 7/4/7/4/14=3.6

Bottle at home. Black, light brown head. Sweet, roasted malts, raisins, prunes, licorice, coffee (espresso), a bit sour and some bitterness. Not so smooth and pleasant as I prefer a stout.

Bottle from River’s Bend. Poured a black color with a huge frothy brown head that lasted and produced good lacing. Good roasted malt and dark fruit aroma. Full body with a smooth sticky texture. Complex roasted dark fruit stout flavor with a medium bittersweet smooth finish of moderate duration. Very well balanced dark fruity stout.

2006 vintage bottle shared from Deanso. Pours dark brown, almost black with a beige head. Aroma is musty, licorice, overripe dark fruit and port aspects, a touch of vanilla and chocolate and caramel. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and light bitter. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Excellent
