Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

330ml bottle pours cola brown with foamy tan head. Aromas of dried fruit, dark malts and herbal characters. Tastes of caramel malt, raisin, brown sugar, molasses, liquorice, bready yeast and spices. Long finish with mild bitterness, slight astringency and dark treacle characters. The big body and layered flavours hide the massive 11% alc vol well. Very dark and complex quad!

Flesje thuis gedronken.

W aromacie suszone owoce, trochę alkoholu, niezbyt bogato. W smaku już fajniejsze, przyjemnie gęste, długi posmak. Wypite trochę na szybko, ale nie robi jakiegoś specjalnego wrażenia.

Bottle from Cork & Cask. Murky ruby body with medium beige head. Lively carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of marzipan, leather and wood. Flavour of plum, raisin, coriander and brown sugar. Medium body with a smooth texture. Soft fizz. It’s good but doesn’t have as much depth or complexity as I had hoped.

Bottle at home. Pours deep brown with a creamy, dense, beige head. Chestnut, candied sugar, caramel, dates and raisins. Well balanced sweetness. Elegant.

Appearance: Pours hazy dark brown with lasting creamy off-white head, with lacing. 5/5 Aroma: Heavy caramel and dark fruits (prunes, plums and raisins), moderate malt, with a slight touch of hops. 6/10 Taste: Lots of dark fruits, hops and roasted malt, with molasses, caramel, and some spice. Quite sweet (but not cloying, the residual sugars just balanced the booze well) and moderate bitter, with some alcohol. The finish is slight bitter, fruity up front with a toasted malt boozy aftertaste. 8/10 Mouthfeel: Oily, smooth, full bodied, carbonation is medium. 5/5 Overall: Very vinous and fruity for a quadrupel, rather roasty though. 12/20

Red/brown color, large brown head. Aromas of black tea, honey, spices and yeast. Sweet taste with brown sugar, yeast, alcohol, iron, dried fruit and slight tea.

Zilverenmaan (336) - Antwerp, BELGIUM - JAN 15, 2018
Poors dark red brown with medium, mocha head, oily, not to say syrupy... Taste medium: some dark fruits, more sour red fruits, caramel, nice taste of alcohol too, but distinctly sweet, somewhat sticky even. Alcohol wel hidden, considering. Mediocre, simply not in the same league as the likes of rochefort, westvleteren, st. Bernardus,... Forgettable: if Rochefort 10 is RAFC, this is Beerschot-Wilrijk...

NiklasT (158) - SWEDEN - JAN 12, 2018
UPDATED: JAN 12, 2018 Dark, dark ruby with a beige head. Clear. Aroma a bit week but taste is enourmos. Figs, dates, raisins and still not overwhelmingly sweet. Great balance with the typical Belgium yeastiness. A distinct bitterness at the end. Fantastic!
