Taras Boulba is the perfect session beer — loaded with complex yeast flavors, hopped to perfection, and as drinkable as any beer you’ve ever tried. At 4.5% alcohol, it’s built for drinkability — we suggest buying it by the case.

You’re no doubt wondering where the name comes from and what the hell the foreign text says. It’s all been explained to us by the brewers, but we’re still not entirely clear about it. What we can understand is that a young Flemish man has gone and married a French-speaking Wallonian girl, and his father, Taras Boulba, is very angry. (Smeirlap means ‘fool’ in a bizarre local dialect, which combines Flemish and French, somehow.)

This is all a bastardization of the original story by Gogol, whose protagonist was Ukrainian (Zaporozhian Cossack, specifically), and a Protestant. His son marries a Polish girl, a Catholic, during the religious war between the two countries in the 1600s, and the Ukrainian father simply kills his son to eliminate the shame.

Packaging: 330ml bottles; 6/750ml cork-finished champagne bottles, 30L kegs

Papsoe (25054) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - SEP 27, 2007
(Bottle 33 cl) Pours a hazy, pale golden with a tall and handsome, white head. Fresh, citrusy, hoppy nose. Light in body with a clean malt base but otherwise completely dominated by very dry, citrusy hop notes that also leave quite a heavy bitterness. Pleasant. 180907

Leicht trübes strohgelbes Bier mit schöner weißen Schaumkrone. Geruch getreidig, fruchtig. Geschmack fruchtig malzig, aromatisch fruchtig, bitter, wenig Gewürze.

Tap at Mugs in Brooklyn. I started my night with this - great choice. This beer is highly drinkable and fairly light, though not lacking in flavor. Pours a light yellow with modest haze and a moderate white head. Holds a very floral aroma with some nice bready malts. Flavor has a nice sweetness to it, along with wheat and citrus notes. Some faint bitterness meanders. Light to medium in body with average carbonation. Finishes clean and smooth. Very good and refreshing.

Light hazy yellow with a white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, yeasty and moderate hoppy - citrus. Flavor is medium sweet and rather bitter. Dry and rather bitter finish. 081211

2011-09-21, draught at Moeder Lambic, Fontainas, 8-4-7-3-14=36
Cloudy blond color (first glass to be poured from this keg), with giant and creamy head, covering the sides of the glass like a lace made of yogurt. The aroma is graceful and impressive, with crispy malt, light Belgian yeast, delicate grassy hops. The body is light, with mild malt flavor; the yeast character is too much (was the keg shaken?) giving a spicy, peppery note, increasing the bitterness, and ending with some astringency. Must try a cleaner glass...

Cloudy deep blond color, with a huge and compact head. Very good aroma, strong, spicy hops, light fruitiness too. Good body strength and good malt flavor, quite dry (because of the strong bitterness), with a sharp spicy character. The final is powerful and long. It doesn’t betray the Belgian tradition, but pushes it in a right direction; the combination of spicy Ales with a more powerful hopping has a good result here. Very good.

Hazy blond color; nice perlage; thin persistent head. Good hoppy aroma, some malt and spices. Dry mouthfeel, but correct body strength, some malt flavor (light), quite sharp spicy character (coriander and white pepper), strong bitterness. Pleasant, refreshing.

Tap at Moeder Lambic Fontainas, 29/04/13. Hazed golden amber with a decent sized off white head. Nose is citrus, yeast, grass, orange peel, fruits. Taste comprises orange pith, lemon, yeast esters, grass, light spice. Medium bodied with fine carbonaiton. Ok stuff.

mcberko (19837) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - JUL 3, 2013
330mL bottle, pours a cloudy blonde with a large frothy white head. Aroma brings out uber fresh hay, wheat, and lots of grassy hops - wonderfully fresh nose. Flavour is super dry and quite hoppy for a Belgian beer, with loads of hay, grassy hops and a wheaty quality. Extremely refreshing and dry in the palate, with loads of flavour for a 4.5% beer. Excellent stuff.

saxo (19583) - Højbjerg, Aarhus, DENMARK - JUL 12, 2009
Bottle. Medium head with medium duration. Color is hazy golden. Aroma and taste are hops, straw, flowers, malt and notes of citrus.

harrisoni (19541) - Ashford, Kent, ENGLAND - SEP 27, 2006
Draught - Bruxellensis Festival. Hazy gold with thin off white head. Hoppy aroma. OK in mouth, some cream. Really hoppy, dry finish, bit like de Ranke XX bitter, but not as extreme
