Taras Boulba is the perfect session beer loaded with complex yeast flavors, hopped to perfection, and as drinkable as any beer youve ever tried. At 4.5% alcohol, its built for drinkability we suggest buying it by the case.

Youre no doubt wondering where the name comes from and what the hell the foreign text says. Its all been explained to us by the brewers, but were still not entirely clear about it. What we can understand is that a young Flemish man has gone and married a French-speaking Wallonian girl, and his father, Taras Boulba, is very angry. (Smeirlap means fool in a bizarre local dialect, which combines Flemish and French, somehow.)

This is all a bastardization of the original story by Gogol, whose protagonist was Ukrainian (Zaporozhian Cossack, specifically), and a Protestant. His son marries a Polish girl, a Catholic, during the religious war between the two countries in the 1600s, and the Ukrainian father simply kills his son to eliminate the shame.

Bottle. Hazy yellow with white head. Hops, grass, citrus. Fresh. Maybe a better summer than winter beer. Less yeast than expected when I poured the beer.

From 33cl bottle. Pours very pale yellow with abundant white foam. Aroma is citrusy (lemony, bergamot?), and maybe some herbal. Body is light but carbonated. Taste has some sweetness at first which is soon overshadowed by a pleasant bitterness. Finish is short.

Poors straw-yellow, a bit cloudy with yeast particles visible but not offputting. Aroma malty with a distinctive dose of hoppy freshness! Taste a nice grapefruity hoppiness with lingering bitterness. Mouthfeel maybe a little watery and may lack some complexity but given the low alcohol content a very taste brew.

Draft Half Pint at GBBF 2009 (Day 4), Earls Court, London Aug 2009 - Hazy yellow beer. Very hoppy; big hop bite, earthy, grassy, spicy, herbal. Citrus fruity; grapefruit and lemon. Very dry citrus hoppy finish. Very refreshing. Astonishingly flavoursome for such a low ABV. Lovely beer! (2009-08)

Aangenaam, maar heel erg flauw, nietszeggend. Niks mis met de smaak maar weinig over te vertellen.

33 cl bottle from Beergium, bottled 9/9/16. Hazy yellow with a small head. Aroma of floral hops, banana and a whiff of something acidic. Flavor of malts and earthy hops. Average carbonation. Fairly straightforward, refreshing, though slightly harsh hop profile.

On keg at Six Degrees North, Edinburgh. Appearance - golden with a decent head. Nose - lemon and light spice. Taste - more of the same. Palate - close to medium bodied with a tangy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - a decent example of the style.

Aroma: Medium-light spicy, flora, hops, apple. Appearance: Clear, straw colored body with a MASSIVE head. White head with large bubbles, good, rocky retention. Lacing Flavour: Medium bitterness with medium hops, spicy, floral hops. Dry finish with lingering floral notes. Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium-high carbonation. Overall: The spicy/floral hops is present and well balanced. Not as hoppy as I expected, considering the "extra hoppy ale" on the label. I am struggling to find any malt flavours or aromas. 330 ml bottle, poured. 25A. Belgian Blond Ale
