aronvarga (441) - Budapest, HUNGARY - JUL 22, 2013
330 ml bottle @ home. Cloudy; dark amber colour; short-life off white head; mandarin, pine and pineapple aroma; heavy body; medium fizziness; candy sweet and metallic bitter taste; pineapple, mandarin, peach in palate. Complex brew, but too syrupy.

GoufCustom (1977) - HONG KONG - JUL 22, 2013

330 ml bottle bought at The Bottle Shop in Sai Kung.

Appearance: Translucent dark amber colour; One quarter finger head and off white foam which fades in 30 seconds; Small but good sticky lacing with near zero carbonation.

Aroma: Very fragrant and refreshing grapefruit, orange, honey, nice floral / pollen, sweet malt, lime and light grass; Aroma can be smelt more than a feet away.

Taste: Nice and refreshing sweet taste of grapefruit (fresh and juice), strong orange peel, honey, molasses, ale malt, spices, medium liquorices, strong lime and herbal grassy hops.

Body: Mid to light, thin but slick palate.

Mouthfeel: A full bliss of grapefruit and orange attack - grapefruit is intensely refreshing, fruity and juicy, back by nice and strong orange peels. Ale malt taste took a back seat, with spices and herbs take over. Wow! The 9.2% booze acquits itself very well. Always a sign for a good beer.

Hoppiness: the Amarillo put up a lively show with very nice fruit and floral nose and taste, not to mention the Saaz did well with nice spicy and herbal grassy taste. Liquorices is just right for some nice bitterness good enough to balance the sweetness. Long-lasting finish. Very nice!

After Taste: Fairly dry, sweet, spicy hoppy and very attractive to mouth.

Comments: As IIPA, I expect more and this one delivers: amazingly fresh grapefruit, strong orange peel and fresh, lovely sweetness, fragrant floral characters, strong but subtle booze, and just-right bitterness. A great IIPA from a great brewery. Highly recommended!

Bottle from Bierkoning, Amsterdam. Hazy amber pour, with very light white head. Unfortunately waited bit too long to open it (bottled Feb, opened July). Missing the dryhopping aroma. Not much of a nose. Full flavoured: strong cara, malty, slightly sour. Moderately dry finish. Not very hoppy. Nicely boozy.
