Rötlich-bräunliche Farbe mit kleiner, weißer Schaumkrone. Prägnanter Geruch nach süßem Malz und Trockenobst. Der Geschmack zeigt Malz, Karamell, Kandiszucker, alkoholumhüllte Früchte und schwache Hopfenimpulse. Sehr kraftvoll und dabei doch gut ausbalanciert. Gefällt mir sehr gut. 080417. Any way that you look at it this is a big beer and one that I struggled to get through, which is unusual. I think I struggled not only because of the high alcohol content but also because the beer is so robust and full bodied that you almost have to chew your way through it rather than drink it. (Bottle) Amber ruby colour with brief, frothy, beige head. Malty, fruity, vinous nose with caramel, dried fruit, red wine, cherries in brandy and black-currant. Malty, fruity, vinous taste with caramel, red wine, black-currant, some port, raisins, orange peel, red fruit, treacle toffee and a balanced spicy bitterness in a fiery, warming finish. Orange amber with a medium head! Light carbonation. Nose was first old beer, alcohol, caramel, fruits. Taste is ridiculously good and thick oily MF. Malts, caramel, fruits, wine, sour touch, sweet, lots of fruits, maple syrup. Great!

Appearance: Hazy amber colour with no head.
Aroma: Caramel, vinous, fruit, malt, alcohol, wine.
Body: Full body, low carbonation.
Flavour: Dried fruit, caramel, wine, alcohol, berries.
Dark amber with no head. Aroma of dark fruits and caramel. Very sweet and sticky, full bodied, and almost flat. Can’t taste the alcohol but the finish is very warming. Very drinkable for 15%. Stultus (173) - ESTONIA - AUG 6, 2016

The wine barrel aged version of this renowned Dutch barley wine, tasted at the Struise shop in Bruges. Moussy, pale greyish beige, thin and eventually dissolving head over a deep burgundy-hued brownish bronze beer with thin strings of tiny bubbles here and there. Rich and powerful aroma of old madera, toffee, raisins soaked in brown rum, almond, beef stock cubes, wet oak, wet leather, cognac, dried fig, vanilla, bayleaf, hazelnut oil, sherry, candied date. ’Noble’ sweet onset of a lot of dried fruits, raisins, candied dates, soft carbo, deeply situated but noticeable red wine tartness palpable from the start but very restrainedly so, oily and ’moelleux’, very thick, vinous mouthfeel, bit sticky due to the large amount of residual sugars, quite strong beefy umami flavors countering the sweetness, thick caramelly and even lightly chocolatey malt sweet core, strong but non-astringent brandy- and port-like alcohol warmth in the end, some drying wood tannins but softly so and a thin aftermath of red wine flavor, but not nearly as tart and sharp as I have experienced in many other wine barrel aged beers. In all, the same heavy, thick, luscious barley wine as the regular, but with a thin layer of Bordeaux wine added to it. Enjoyable as a slow sipper on a winter night, I’d say.
