(Bottled) Hazy dark ruby color with a small, beige head. Pretty mild, licoricey aroma with sweetish, smooth maltiness and some dried fruit. Burned-roasty, neutral maltiness with some ashes and sweetish-salty licorice in the flavor. Medium-bodied, very smooth and quite low-carbonated palate. Yes, there’s some Rochefort character, especially in the aroma - although it’s quite a bit milder than in the original. Overall a smooth, tasty and balanced, very nice dubbel. bierkoning (13813) - La Tropica/Doarp, NETHERLANDS - NOV 6, 2006
UPDATED: MAR 2, 2007 Bottle, bought at the brewery. I’ve used Rochefort yeast for this one, brewer Menno Olivier says proudly. Dark brown color. Apple, chocolate, cinnamon and yeast in the aroma. Indeed, there is some Rochefort character, but I wouldn’t have guessed it without knowing. Chocolate, apple and plums in the flavor. Malty, medium bodied, not too sweet. Blackcurrant, somewhat yeasty. Some distant hop character. Velvety. Likeable beer.
