HV (4) - Utrecht, - JUL 31, 2009
Appearance: no foam. This is the first beer I’ve come across that has absolutely none. No lacing, hardly any carbonation. Colour and opacity are as one would expect to seen in an imperial stout. It’s dark, very dark. Tipping the glass shows lots of sugar in the beer. Aroma opens with dark dried fruit, prunes and currants, with something vaguely citrusy lingering (candied peel ?) in the back. Mouthfeel: first sip is like drinking port. This brew is incredibly syrupy. The flavour is very well-balanced, slightly malty with overwhelming dark fruit, prunes, cherries and currants. There is a recurring touch of fruit, and friendly bitterness - like orange marmelade on slightly blackened toast in the aftertaste. Drinkability: go easy on this one. It’s heavy in flavour and mouthfeel, but also heavy on the alcohol. Drink slowly and enjoy (I’m sure you will!) Overall impression: great beer - an impressive imperial stout, if perhaps slightly low in foam. Otherwise, it’s superb.

Brilliant stout! Lost for words, what is this? It's a perfect homecoming, an easter diner, a christmas tree, a halloween candle. Everything tied to stouts, it's all in here. Firm and steady body, whiskey and peaty, all present. Beautiful beer for sure.

UPDATED: NOV 18, 2017 Perfect pour. Completely black with a great mocha head, doesn't dissipate immediately either. Aroma is predominantly roasty, coffee, cocoa, rich and dark. Medium body. Flavour is beautifully balanced, malty and still very roast centred. Very bitter, malty, bittersweet chocolate, coffee, rich and rather complex, some hoppy notes. Finishes bittersweet, with chocolate notes, warming. Awesome Imperial stout, very solid interpretation. Very much roast-oriented, almost a bit too much, but otherwise excellent.

Otro grande! Perfil clásico de los mitos en el estilo, tirando más a los frutos secos y tostados que a torrefactos. Nunca falla!!

Bottle. Black with visible carbonation (meduim bubbles), tiny head. Aroma coffee, dark chocolate, baked chestnuts, some vanilla and soya sauce. Dense texture, but not oily. Initial sweetness soon combined with bitter tones. The soya sauce (teriyaki) feel comes back in the finish.

Bottle. Petrol black pour with small tan head. Aroma: heavy roast & coffee, estery hints, solid citrusy hops. Medium body. Medium dry taste. Overload of roasted malts & coffee making the stout one-dimensional. Medium to heavy citrusy and resiny bitterness. This beer is a sign of sometimes over the top craft hype that damages the harmony. The rating shows the skills of the brewmasters rather than my pleasure degree.

Bottle from De Bierkoning. Small beige head, very dark brown colour. Aroma of coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, a bit of soy sauce. Light bitter with sweet aftertaste, thick, oily, soft carbonation. Very decent.

Very dark beer with creamy taste of coffee and dark chocolate. Kind of a dessert beer that goes perfect with cheese or something sweet. Heavy beer that deserves a second try.

Imperial stout met zeer donkere kleur en lichtbruin schuim. Smaakt naar koffie en pure chocolade met een kruidige bittere afdronk. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draught at Arendsnest. Black with a tan head. Aroma of coffee and chocolate. Flavour is sweet milky chocolate, develops into a bitter background, oily chocolate finish.
