2014 bottle (10% ABV), with thanks to bytemesis. The kid is in bed, the wife is out of town, and I’m enjoying the quiet of the evening by contemplating some hell and damnation. Pours near black with dense mocha head that dissipates in short order to a ring of bubbles. Nose begins with an off-putting metallic note (would be a 9 but for that), but that gets crowded out by dark fruit, berries, rich creamy milk chocolate spiked with vanilla and unrefined molasses. Like a bowl of luscious fruit covered in boozy chocolate syrup. Once in the mouth, this is both less and more than the nose. First is the gasoline. Big harsh alcohol element which on the first sip made me gasp/exhale in a manner not unlike the drunk in Pete’s Dragon (they just don’t make kids shows like they used to). This burns. The burn is followed by some tannic (I presume) astringency and then a heavy roast coffee character. Still sweet up front and still bringing with it those dark fruits, but that’s quickly overpowered by the harsher elements. Palate: full body, thick viscous (between syrupy and chewy) texture, soft carbonation. Overall: This one is all Jekyll and Hyde. Shot of bourbon chasing a 50/50 shot of espresso/chocolate syrup.

Pours Black, with barely a head. Aroma is crazy: bourbon, wood, smoke, malt, buttered toast, vanilla, cocoa, alcohol, banana.Taste is sweet, sour, umami, and then bitter. Finish is salty/bitter/umami. Palate is oily and slick, like a bourbon, with a very mild carbonation. I love this brewer’s sour beers, and that character is in this fucker. It’s fantastic, but i regret drinking this so soon. Should have aged it.

Bottle from De Hopduvel. Dark brown/black colour, light brown foam. Soft carbonation. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee and a lot of vanilla. Also caramel and toffee. Some notes of port. Good bourbon imperial stout!

2011 Bottling
From notes. Tasted in early December 2012 from a 7oz nip bottle, shared with Curtis. Pours nearly black with no head. The nose is milk and dark chocolate, coffee, molasses, vanilla, coconut, and maple bourbon. The flavor is a bit sweet bourbon up front, but balanced out nicely by all of the coffee, dark chocolate, and molasses. The body is full with nearly no carbonation and a long sweet bourbon and bitter coffee and dark chocolate finish.

Black, no foam. Aroma if bourbon, taste of American Bourbon. Nice soft taste. I do not consider this a beer, didn’t drink it as a beer. But very, very good nevertheless. (Velp 201501)

Wonderful. Great aroma of roasted malts, coffee and bourbon. Pitch black in color with a tan head. Very viscous and smooth with good carbination. Strong and full flavors of roasted malt, vanilla, coffee, and a hint of bourbon. Nice hops balance. So well blended.

tastybeer (1853) - Indiana, USA - JAN 8, 2015
Bottle. Pours black, small tan head, no retention/lace. Aroma of booze, dark chocolate, vanilla, roast, light oak. Taste is very hot/boozy, roast, lemon?, some vanilla/oak shining through. Palate is low carbonation, high warmth, boozy finish. Very hot; hard to drink.
