One of countless variations on the imperial stout theme by De Molen. Yellowish beige, thinnish and fairly loose yet moussy head, colour opaque black, no light coming through at all. Very strong aroma, the vanilla and smoked meat still reach your nose from a yard away; other impressions of chocolate sauce, charcoal, cigar ashes, hint of bourbon, tar, leather, oak, walnuts, pipe tobacco, candied dates, soup meat, peat. Sweet onset of candied fruit and chocolatey malts, something honeyish, very smooth, oily and even juicy mouthfeel with low carbonation, deep multi-layered, delicious maltiness, nutty, caramelly and profoundly chocolatey, lots of vivid spicy yeastiness, smokiness appearing more prominently in the finish but more sutbly than I had expected and therefore in good balance with the maltiness; in the end, woody tannins, warming bourbon, some peppery hops and a full, mouth-lining, thick coffee-like roasted bitterness appear in full glory, all balanced well. The smoky touch remains the longest, as well as the throat being warmed by the alcohol. I had expected either the smoky or the roasted bitter character to dominate even more as is often the case in this type of beers, but they are both gentle and rounded and keep themselves in place, leaving both each other as well as the delicious chocolatey malt sweetness enough room to express itself. The alcohol is quite prominent in the tail, but stays charming and does not become too wry or obnoxious. I was particularly marvelling at the ashy charcoal aspect of the aroma, and this aspect too remains gentle enough not to outplay the other flavour components. Wonderful, different, complex and powerful, in my view this is one of those beers which make a convincing argument for De Molens world class status.

Drank 20-1 while wrting in my diary. Very smoky smell. Had to get used to that. After a while that gets better. Smoke is present in the taste as well but there are also nice hints of bourbon.

330ml bottle courtesy of Benzai. Thanks. pours a nearly opaque black color with no head. The aroma is strong with licorice, vanilla and bourbon. The taste reflects the nose with a big black licorice character, followed by molasses, cocoa, vanilla and some mild whiskey notes. The palate is full and a bit sticky with soft carbonation. Finishes medium in duration and sweet. Overall: Very sweet, almost like drinking licorice syrup. Definitely take this one in small doses.

Bottle. Black with a light brown head. Nice aroma with bourbon, licorice, dark chocolate, salami, peat. Taste follows and adds toffee and fudge. A very nice barrel aging of an already very tasty beer.

33cl bottle from Erzbierschof. A smooth and sweet beer, very well balanced with a clear bourbon note, but I find it a bit too conservative.

Black appearance with small head. Vanilla and peat in the aroma, also a bit of cow staples. Taste is sweet, very sweet, with a bit of wood and peat. I think I like the regular Hemel & Aarde more. Thick and liquorice feeling. This is too sweet. Still a fine one.

Bottle from Guinn shared with Peter. He picked it upon Amsterdam and brought it home. Pours a very dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is earthy, roasty, smokey peat. And some malty caramel. Flavor follows with good smokiness and dark malt. Really nice beer. Thanks Guinn!
