4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: MAR 12, 2011 24th September 2010. Borefts Beer Festival.
Clear red amber beer, no head. Light soft palate. Sweet malt with subtle port flavours with lovely sweet cognac. A little lactose sweetness in the undertone. Very well hidden 17.0%. Some strawberry sweetness before a dry finish. Immensely drinkable and I spent a good part of the second day with 8 glasses of this treat. It stood up to and was better than every other beer at the festival (and there were many great ones) with the exception of the Kaggen. Absoloutely delicious.
8th and 10th March 2011
Draft at Arends Nest. This great beer has developed further. Amber beer, clear. Zero head. A light touch of apple on the nose. This tastes like a quality sweet dessert wine that has a drop of cognac added. Lovely! On the 10th had a couple of glasses where it came across as more sherryish with sweet woody cognac. My work mates and many others - including the bartender - could not accept this as a beer. Shame for them - I think it’s a classic beer.
Bottle. Dark amber, hazy, with a low tan head. Ohhhh this is sweet and boozy! But possessing a really nice flavour profile, like tawny port but with woody undertones and just a hint of funk. Bordering on hot, but walks the line as a nice sipper. Stuu666 (13433) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - JAN 20, 2015
Bottle at Craig’s. Pours hazy brown, sweet toffee/caramel, malty, fruit, raisins. BenH (3439) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - JAN 3, 2015

No head, just some bubbles. Aroma is slightly rich, caramel malts, oak, dark sugar, spices, cognac, licorice, dried dark fruits, hints of butterscotch. Taste is slightly sweet fruity, raisins, dark sugar, grass, honey cake, caramel malts, oak, dates, cognac, butterscotch, cognac. Medium bitterness, slightly sweet oaky mouthfeel, no carbonation. Very well hidden alcohol in the taste. Nice, and this one has aged very good...
Ultra-strong barley wine matured on cognac barrels, and I suppose the cognac remaining in the wood has helped a lot to boost the alcohol level. Thin off-white head, misty bronze colour. Complex and powerful aroma of honey, liquorice, cognac, wood, vanilla, mint, raisins, pear syrup. Very complex taste, sweet exotic fruits, honey sweetness of the kind I love in a good barley wine, velvety and vinous mouthfeel, touches of port wine and candi syrup, candied fruits, warm alcoholic, brandy-like finish but still elegant, though the initial sweetness sticks a bit.

Bottle @ tasting, courtesy of deanso. The original 18cl bottle, red waxed. Very cool. Pours a clear amber beer with almost no head on top. Aroma is rather strange, loads of booze and brandy, caramel and oak. Flavor is very sweet, boozy and has some woody influences. Very sweet and vineous, almost like port. Age has smoothened the edges off this beer, but it’s still mostly an alcohol bomb, unbalanced. Quite ok to drink though, but I’m happy it comes in small servings. deanso (10141) - Chiang Mai, THAILAND - MAY 24, 2014
18cl botlle shared.

Bottle shared. Pours clear brown with no head. Aroma is a little vegetal, caramel, sweet malt, carrot, cabbage. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation. vtafro (7445) - Wayne, New Jersey, USA - MAY 23, 2014
(Backlog) Bottle. Brown pour with very low carb, tan bubbles. Fruit and sweet aromas. Flavor is dominated with huge sweetness, fruit, spice, and malt tones; abv of 17% somehow is the backburner. Staffan47 (909) - Uppsala, SWEDEN - MAY 14, 2014
Flaska 2010 nr 588 på Mikkeller bar Stefansgade. Äntligen! Sökt den här ett bra tag nu. Bra pris dessutom. Doften är fantastisk. Kombo av en weer & vind och en bra gammal Hardys. Torkade frukter, tung och komplex. Känns dessutom som den toppar nu. Världsklass. Blir inte mycket bättre än så här. Ingen störande oxidering. Helt flat. Cognacsfatets bidrag är diskret.
