[bottle at BrewDog pub in Edinburgh] Spicy woody dry pineapple aroma with some barnyard and phenoic character. Opaque black under lacy, light brown. Brightly sour flavour with coffee and fudge brownies and earthy notes. Stout with Belgian yeast--slightly phenolic. Light to medium body, medium carbonation, sugary finish.

TheAlum (7164) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - DEC 9, 2012
Draft on tap at Zwanze Day 2012 - West Lakeview Liquors (Chicago, IL). Pours a deeper brown hue. Firm darkness in the middle, good haze as the edges show glowing chestnut and amber hues, some light. Frothy offwhite head atop dies to a small layer and laces small. Aromas are dark malts, touches of cocoa and biscuits, firm dark fruit and toasty roast elements work in. Gentle yeast, dryness from the toast and roast. Caramel and toffee. Initial is bitter cocoa, some toffee and some weird dark fruit elements off the bat. Plum, touches of cherry, anise and licorice turn me off quickly. Middle shows dark fruit and toffee, toast and biscuits. Some cocoa as it wins me back. Backend gets more dry, returning to almost a licorice feel, darkness, and dry roasty and toasty malts. The Belgian element here loses me. Finish is a bit harsh and medicinal. Meh. Not my thing. An ok beer.

pours very deep shade of brown, pretty much black, with large frothy light brown head. Aroma is dark and fruity with notes of yeast, licorice, medicinal, prune, date, country cane syrup. Flavor has notes of lightly bittered chocolate, with sweet medicinal licorice on the finish, which evolves through different tones of dark fruit. Medium to full bodied, not as syrupy as I expected (although it really does smell like cane syrup). Licorice is a big presence. Overall nice chocolatey, medicinal licorice drink.

Feels like a dark barleywine to me. Smells and tastes bright, but only if drunk extremely slowly. Lots of licorice and caramel. Alcohol is definitely present. Pretty sure I love this. Pretty sure.

UPDATED: OCT 4, 2014 33cl bottle to taster Aroma of caramel, bread, molasses, treacle, and salt. Appearance is a deep reddish brown with a large bubbly tan head. Taste is quite sweet, caramel, blackstrap molasses, and soy. Medium bodied and oily.

NobleSquirrel (3438) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 5, 2012
Draft at WLV, Zwanze Day 12. Pours a deep brown with a thin tan head. Nose is caramel, faint phenol, sweet and brooding. Some dark melanoidins from the malt and bread. On tasting, quite sweet with a balancing bitterness. One-dimensional. Bready malt comes through and some herbal hopping. Lacks overall complexity. Closer to a barleywine, imo. Okay.

IlBevitorediLA (452) - ITALY - DEC 2, 2012

langeveld12 (553) - NETHERLANDS - DEC 2, 2012
Large light brown creamy head that mostly diminishes. Body is ruby and cloudy. Aroma contains bread, molasses, dark chocolate, lemon, dough, spices and licorice. Flavor starts off with sweet and chocolate, to be followed by malts and yeasts, with a bitter hoppy finish. Acidity is always around, strong in the beginning and middle. Palate is medium to full, with a syrupy texture and soft carbonation. Although it contains quite some alcohol it' s hardly noticeable. First few sips I disn't really like it but it grows on you. All in all a good beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPad

Big tan head that dissipates. Lots of raisin in the flavor with a touch if sweetness and a bit of roasted coffee malt. Some chocolate flavors and a cocoa gritty texture. Love the big beers from these guys and this does not disappoint.
