Bottled from either Biernavigatie or Het Biermoment. Cola colored, small brownish head. Very smoky nose, quite some pepper as well. Flavor of roasted malts, quite sweet, smoke, pretty spicy, which increases every sip. Thick mouthfeel, low carbonation. Lasting hot chili finish, burning in the throat. Finally a new Molen beer that i like again, although they could have used a bit less chili.

On tap at Brouwcafe de Molen, Bodegraven on 29-Apr-2017. Dark brown with a small beige coloured head. Aroma of peat, coffee and spices. Full body and soft carbonation. Taste is smokey peat, oak, caramel, malt, dark fruits and chilli pepper. Really peaty, resembling a whisky with medium heat. Pretty good smoked beer.

One of my favorite beer from De Molen, i really enjoyed the combination of smoke cover by the heat of the chilly and the Abv hidden behind them. Traces of caramel, wood. Pours dark brown color, medium carbonation, medium body. Bottle: 330ml

A rare beer. This is a beer smoked something strange. Only erveses had been smoked in Germany. There are dsegradat m, but if you encounter heir desquilibrada the smoke hid the rest of the beer.

330ml bottle at the Post Office Vaults, Birmingham. Dark brown with a fine pale mocha head. Sweet smoked meats on the nose, mainly gammon, with a distinctive note of sweet gravy. Compact smoked bacon flavour with a delicate clove/aniseed spice and a chilli afterburn. Side flavour of peaty whiskey vapour.

Sometimes it takes a really good beer, to shift the paradigm you once held for a particular style. The smoked beers of Bamberg tend to be what come to mind when I reference the style. De Molens Rook & Vuur presented something totally different. Despite its hefty 8.2% ABV and its inclusion of a usually overwhelming ingredient, chilies, its a richy, meaty beer that captures the flavors of the style without the usual amount heaviness. Delicious notes of briny pork and cocoa. The chilies undoubtedly add a beautiful layer of smokiness, but I never would have pinpointed that flavor on my own. Its a complex, masterful Smoked brew.
